STAFFORD – After winning the 2024 Street Stock championship at Stafford, Travis Downey returned to the track in 2025 focused on winning another title, but even more focused on doing something else.
Downey’s goal for 2025 was to finish on track for every event.
Friday, for the 17th time this season, Downey did just that and also got the chance to celebrate a second consecutive title.
Downey used a ninth place finish in Friday’s 20-lap Street Stock finish to clinch his second straight title.
“We came into this season with a thought that maybe we could win it back-to-back, but our initial thought was to have no DNF’s and we did that and that’s why we’re here,” Downey said.
Downey, of Barkhamstead, came into the final event of the season holding a 34-point lead over Aaron Plemons in the standing.
“This is a pretty awesome feeling to be up here back to back,” Downey said. “I completed like 350 laps this year. I never had a DNF or anything. My crew, my wife, my family, everybody involved in this worked really hard to make sure that this car finished every lap. I’m very proud of everybody. Proud of myself. Proud of this place, Stafford. Proud of all my fans. Everybody that comes here to watch me race, I love all you guys. Thank you very much.”
Drama between Downey and Plemons happened quickly. On lap two contact from Plemons going into turn three spun Downey out of fifth place. Plemons was penalized to the back of the field for the incident.
Plemons, of Uncasville, ended up rallying to second place, allowing him only to cut into Downey’s lead by 14 points.
“That thing back there, [Downey] just hooked a left and I didn’t lift,” Plemons said. “I don’t really agree with that call. We had a great season. Just bad luck. It takes a lot to be a champion. Congrats to Downey, he finished every race and stayed out of trouble and we got wrecked by people, I don’t what for, but we just had bad luck.”
Consecutive was the word of the evening when it came to the division. After getting his first career Street Stock victory last week, Jason Raymond of Somers backed it up with his second consecutive victory in the division’s 20-lap feature Friday. Raymond went to the lead on lap 10 and never trailed again.
“I couldn’t ask for a better way to end this season,” Raymond said. “The car’s been really good all year. A lot of people to thank for that. That was a rough one. It felt like it took forever to get going and when it did it went pretty good. The car was good all day. It’s been fast for the past couple weeks. I’m just happy to be here.”
PJ Evans of Uncasville was third.
