RaceDayCT Exclusive: NASCAR To Host Whelen Modified Tour Tire Test With American Racer

For nearly three decades Hoosier Tires and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour have gone hand-in-hand working together exclusively.

Could there be a change on the horizon for that relationship?

A NASCAR spokesperson confirmed to RaceDayCT Tuesday that NASCAR and the tire company American Racer will hold a Whelen Modified Tour tire test on Wednesday at Jennerstown Speedway in Jennerstown, Pa.

Jennerstown Speedway is located about an hour south of the American Racer headquarters in Indiana, Pa. The half-mile Jennerstown Speedway has hosted the Whelen Modified Tour for 18 events since 1987. The series last visited the facility in 2022.

The NASCAR spokesperson could not comment on the test beyond confirming that it was happening. Attempts to reach American Racer management were unsuccessful on Tuesday.

Hoosier has been the exclusive tire provider for the Whelen Modified Tour since the 1999 season. Before 1999 Hoosier and Goodyear provided tires on the Whelen Modified Tour during what was known as the “Tire War Era”.

Sources have indicated that four-time Whelen Modified Tour champion Justin Bonsignore and 12-year series veteran Craig Lutz are expected to take part in the test. It’s unclear if any other drivers beyond those two will take part.

  1. I hope that NASCAR is definitely going to do this test. I have nothing personally against Hoosier but competition is usually good in general. That’s my two cents anyway. Cheers 🍻

  2. Dang… I remember when Firestone tires were an option.

  3. Hey Shawn!

When I said “I hope NASCAR does the test”, I was commenting on your original post, before you had confirmed it through a NASCAR spokesman. Cheers

    • DanD,
And I had actually responded to you before it was confirmed by NASCAR and the story was updated. Was just emphasizing in my response that I would have not published the story (even based on source confirmation as it was initially) if I wasn’t positive it was actually happening. I know there’s a lot of outlets that will publish stories on hunches, rumors and hopes, but not here. If I publish that “sources” have told me there will be a test then I have absolutely confirmed it is happening or I would not publish it here. Not trying to be snooty here, just explaining that if I publish it I’m only publishing it because I know it’s true.

  4. Hey Shawn

Thank you for the clarification, I appreciate your honesty. I enjoy all the content that Race Day CT puts out. I try not to read into things, I didn’t take your response in a negative way at all. It will be interesting to see what comes of the tire test. Thanks again for the clarification and thanks for the content! Cheers

  5. Did we hear anything about the results of this test, Drivers, crew chiefs ?? Just wondering!
