Steven Reed of Jackson, N.J. held off a charging Matt Hirschman over the final three laps to score victory in the 100-lap Crate Modified feature on day one of the Turkey Derby at Wall Stadium Friday.

Hirschman, of Northampton, Pa, was second and Tyler Truex of West Creek, N.J. was third.

Reed inherited the lead with three laps left after disaster struck for Preston’s Max Zachem.

Zachem looked to be in position to score the victory, but spun out of the lead trying to navigate by the lapped car of Dakota Kessler with three laps remaining.

“I was tucked under Max,” Reed said. “… Three to go, I was setting up for a good move to make on the last lap and keep it exciting. … I guess a lapped car, one of the cars that brought out every caution or something, just stopped in front of him or something. We got bumper tagged and then he disappeared. I hate it for Max, he’s really good.”

On the restart Hirschman got glued to Reed’s bumper and made numerous moves to try to move him over the final three laps.

“We were running around under caution and I said ‘Whatever happens, I’m not coming off the bottom.’” Reed said. “Three laps, if they could drive around the outside of this thing, go ahead. But you were going to need more than Wrecker One to tow me off the bottom.”

Blake Barney was fourth and Jimmy Blewett fifth.
