STAFFORD – Chris Matthews wasted no time in 2026 in extending his lead as the winningest SK Light Modified driver ever at Stafford Speedway.
Matthews drove away from all contenders over the final nine laps to win the 30-lap SK Light Modified feature Sunday at the NAPA Spring Sizzler at Stafford Speedway.
Matthews went by Peter Bennett for the lead on lap 21 and never trailed again. It was the 26th career victory in the division for Matthews, of Stafford.
“It was a little crazy, but this Chassis Pro car was just rocking,” Matthews said. “It was great. A couple laps to get going and then it would just roll.”
Nick Anglace of Seymour was second and Bennett, of Windsor, was third.
“We had a really good car, I can’t be disappointed,” Anglace said. “… Anytime you can leave with a trophy is a good day.”
Said Bennett: “Overall a great race and a great start to the year.”
With 13 laps remaining Bennett went three wide on the outside to overtake Brian Sullivan for the lead. On a lap 18 restart, Bennett got the jump with Sullivan moving by Tyler Barry for second.
On lap 20 Matthews went by Anglace and Sullivan to move into second. A lap later Matthews used a diving move under Bennett into turn three to take over the lead.
