A pair of 12th place finishes in the first two events of the season on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour have set Matt Hirschman on a mission in recent weeks searching for speed.
It looks like the Northampton, Pa. driver did well in that search.
Hirschman topped the charts in time trial qualifying Sunday at Thompson for the Icebreaker 150.
Hirschman toured the .625-mile oval with a fast lap of 19.125 seconds for his 20th career series pole and first of the season.
Jon McKennedy (19.125 seconds) of Chelmsford, Mass. matched Hirschman’s speed. NASCAR rules deem the first driver to set the time gets the pole award.
Stephen Kopcik of Newtown, who scored his first career series victory in the Virginia Is For Racing Lovers 200 at Martinsville Speedway on March 28, was third in qualifying at 19.128 seconds.
Mike Christopher Jr. of Wolcott and Austin Beers of Northampton, Pa. rounded out the top-five in qualifying respectively.
Andrew Molleur, Ron Silk, Ronnie Williams, Matt Swanson and Eric Goodale made up sixth through tenth in that order.
