THOMPSON – It’s hard to keep up with the whereabouts of Jake Johnson these days. Sometimes he’s competing for wins on the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series. Other times he’s chasing victories on the American-Canadian Tour. Last weekend he was at Ace Speedway in Elon, N.C. finishing second in a CARS Tour Pro Late Model series event.

Wednesday though Johnson was back home at Thompson Speedway doing what he’s done so many other times at the historic .625-mile oval.

Johnson, of Rehoboth, Mass., drove his Hartwell Motorsports entry away from the field to win the 25-lap Late Model feature Wednesday at Thompson Speedway.

“Yeah, Late Model racing definitely is home base for me,” Johnson said. “That’s where it kind of all started. It always feels good to hop in a Late Model. These Hartwell guys, it’s like family. We have a lot of fun, and it’s a nice, refreshing break from some of the <odified racing because sometimes it gets a little intense. These guys keep it fun, and we run good, so it’s always a good time.”

Connor Souza of Riverside, R.I. was second and Matt Lowinski-Loh of Thompson was third.

Johnson beat Souza to the checkered by 1.7 seconds.

“Jake’s a great race car driver,” Souza said. You know, that’s an awesome team he drives for. So, you know, I knew they were gonna have a good piece. I knew we were gonna have to have something really good to beat him. It’s fine to finish second. I think we got a little work to do on this car since it’s the first time we brought it here, but I think we got a good baseline and we just gotta tweak it a little bit more to get to these guys.”
