STAFFORD – There have been quite a few nights since 2020 where it seemed Mikey Flynn was going to add his name to the winner’s list in the SK Modified division at Stafford.
And then something would happen to make it go away.
Friday the Hampden, Mass. driver finally had the night that went right.
Flynn dominated on the way to victory in the 40-lap SK Modified feature Friday at Stafford.
“Out there it was just the longest race ever,” Flynn said. “It seems like things haven’t gone our way the last five years. I was just waiting for the caution or waiting for something to happen. When it got to the those last five laps they just felt like forever. People say when they win [for the first time] the laps feel longer and that’s definitely true. When I was out front it felt like longer laps. The emotions are through the roof. It took a long time. We had many opportunities to win and they just didn’t go our way. Now that we’ve got the first one hopefully it can lead to many others.”
Flynn, who has raced full-time in the division since 2020, was making his 72nd SK Modified start of his career on Friday. He raced in the SK Light Modified feature at Stafford from 2017 to 2019.
“Our family didn’t really come from racing,” Flynn said. “We started this racing deal by ourselves. I was the first one ever to race in my family. To see how far it’s come and to see how much we know about cars now and how good our team is now, it’s crazy. This is just a family team. … This is hard stuff, these guys are really good and they know their stuff. It took a long time, but I’m proud of it and I wouldn’t change a thing.”
Flynn passed Dylan Kopec for the lead on lap 12 and never trailed again.
Kopec, of Meriden, was second and Marcello Rufrano of North Haven third.
