On Friday Gervais showed he was no one hit wonder.

Gervais, of Southbury, held off a charging Ryan Preece on the final lap to win the 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature Friday at Stafford Speedway.

“We knew we had a good car this year. It just took us a while to get the car handling at night,” Gervais said. “After that first win we really knew we could get more. … To make it two for the year, that just means a whole lot for our team. It just feels great.”

Preece, of Berlin, held on for second and Woody Pitkat of Stafford was third.

Gervais passed Frank Ruocco for the lead on lap nine. He held about a six car length lead with six laps left. With two laps left Preece was back to his bumper.

On the final lap Preece dove in under Gervais in turn one. The two made contact and Gervais held on with the lead out of turn two.

“The last few laps I was just trying to keep as much of that lead as I could,” Gervais said. “I’d say it worked out just perfectly because he was on my bumper at the end.

“I knew he was looking inside and I knew he was there. I just threw it in there and I was trying to protect the bottom. We got together a little bit, but it was just hard racing and I was able to keep [the lead]. After that I knew I had it alright if I could make that last corner.”
