FOOTBALL FOOTBALL FOOTBALL 2024 !!!! EVERYONE WAKE UP AND PICK YOUR WINNERS FOR WEEK 1
    Atlanta,Cincinnati,Jacksonville,Minnesota, New Orleans,San Francisco,Washington,Baltimore,Chicago,Las Vegas, Miami, Seattle,
    Dallas, Buffalo,Kansas City, Philadelphia

  2. Jake and Doug, I’m in!
So I had suggested to Mr C that he reset the page like he reset the pick 6 page, so we could start anew. I did that without thinking of the consequence, that it would wipe out the team matchups for week one. So Doug, my apologies for doing that, as it wiped out your hard work. Guess I owe you one on that. Possible to repost that, with the guidelines, and that intriguing 2.5 point challenge for taking pats?
Again, my apologies for not thinking that one through guys.

  3. Bobf,
No worries, the previous page is still in up and working. Click here for the previous page

  4. NFL 2024 PICK THE WINNERS WEEK ONE...REFRESH says

Reprint of Bobf’s post lost in translation.

    “Of course I’m in Doug!
So couple of quick points first.
I really did not think of the football picks until you mentioned it in the “unmentionable thread”.
So maybe a little more publication might help get us to five on average.
Secondly, I think it might help if the community football heading read 2023-2024, and thread was reset to clean up all last year’s posts like the pick six racing thread was this year.
Sorry Mr C, we certainly appreciate this, and not trying to make more work for you….
As for pats game, 2.5 pts.. ballsy considering first game out for all teams, I like that challenge.
However, speaking of pats, I’m torn between 9-8 or 8-9 for season. Hmmm injuries same for all. But O line still sucks…..
Does Bill get fired this year, if pats turn out another stinker this year for season?
Scuttlebutt joke in these here parts (I live 20 minutes from Gillette) is kraft spent all this years cap money on all the new stadium improvements! They are impressive…..
Does someone pick up Zappe before Bill can low ball him back for practice squad? So many questions…
Make or break for mac this year. No excuses as O’brian changes everything.
So Doug, can I have a couple days to think about picks? I gotta get reset big guy! Thanks to Mr C for hosting and you for doing all the tracking and posting. Btw, I am a fan of weekly tabulations. I miss them in the racing pick 6. You have spoiled us! But, Gives something to shoot for, for me to try to improve as I get my butt kicked. Compete with myself to get better, it’s personal. I may never win, but thats ok. And thats what makes it fun! So jump in, even if you know nothing about football! Honestly, you will probably do better than any experts with all their metrics! There are upsets every week for sure!
    Thx guys.”

  5. Thanks Shawn. Guess you pulled my fat out of the fire on that one! Now I owe you too!!
    Thx.

  6. Doug;
    Bill being Bill.
Now there is no way in hell that for one second, that I think Bill and co are going to go into the first game without a legit backup qb. The only way this backfires on him is if someone picks up zappe and fouls his plans to get him on practice squad. Or, is that what his end game really is? Who knows? Maybe be he is looking to see if someone picks up carr who was outright released from LV, and see if he can get him on the cheap if no one else bites, if he isn’t already signed (I haven’t checked yet). You just never know with that guy.
    Over under sidebet:
How many games will it take Jimmy G as new starting qb for LV to either
    A) choke
    B) get hurt and go out on IR.
Goes to prove the old car dealers saying.
Theres an ass for every seat! So we’ll see…

  7. NFL 2024 PICK THE WINNERS-TIE BREAKER says

A bit rusty. Forgot the tie breaker

Suitcase Jake Tie Breaker- pick the total score from ANY of the games. Closest to come to that score in the event of a tie wins. If that does not resolve the tie then the HIGHEST of the point totals wins.

No rush, I’ll publish everything again closer to the opener and remind everyone of the tie breaker.

  8. Well that was quick.
Bill signed both zappe and malik cunningham to practice squad today. Landed on his feet again!

  9. Suitcase Jake says

Carr was picked up by Saints with new contract and is the QB1 …

  10. Thx jake!
    Missed that

  11. Fast Eddie says

Fast Eddie – Atlanta, Cleveland, Jacksonville, Tampa, New Orleans, San Francisco, Arizona, Baltimore, Vegas, Chargers, Seattle, Buffalo, Kansas City, New England.

  12. Fast Eddie says

Forgot the tie breaker, Pats game 47 points

  13. Good QB’s, even good backups are hard to come by in the NFL. 31 teams had a shot to claim a guy that knew the Pat’s playbook, that had game experience in Zappe, not one thought he was worth putting on their initial 53 man roster.
So yeah for we Pat’s fans. Belichick is a genius and we’ve got Mac Jones light back on the team. A short, slow backup with a meh arm, that has a hard time holding onto the ball and not that accurate based on the pre-season results. On the plus side he’s durable and with that who knows who will be healthy enough to play offensive line that may be the single most important quality in 2023.
My view this is a throw away year. They bulked up on defense and stitched together a make do offense. Next years draft and a pile of cap space will address the offense.
I’m hoping Fast Eddie can work his magic and that Pat’s first week pick hits. I’ll be happy if New England escapes that game with a short list of injuries.

  14. Yep. Injuries.
The great equalizer among all teams gor sure!

  15. Suitcase Jake says

    Tie breaker,
    Pats, 44
Let me know if I messed anything up doug, thanks!

  19. We’ve got our work cut out for us. The guy that won the playoff round of competition last year in a fierce come back has flipped his strategy and is fixing to start out strong. SC goes into Sunday plus 2.5. How the best NFL QB fails to score with so much time left on the clock at Arrowhead I don’t know but that’s why football is such a great game.

  20. Well, kc will clean all that up, and kelce will eventually be back as well. As for a disgruntled chris jones? I dunno.
But im giving detroit a lot of credit here, and looking at them more seriously in future picks for sure. Great call sc.

Suitcase Jake wins the opener on the tie breaker 8 low to my 9 high.
Congratulations Suitcase Jake, the opener as predicted was a tough even doing it straight up.

  25. Congrats suitcase.
Jees. Whodathunk rogers would go down in first series of downs? Kudos for jets for rallying back after you could gear a pin drop in that stadium. Sure, trip not called on that last play, and thats football. No sour grapes, I give Jets a lot of credit. Allen-diggs connection in tact. Allen thought process at times, i thought was a little suspect. I’ve said this every year. When is allen gonna get hurt? Jees, last night on one of his runs he got pummeled. Just go down dude.

  26. Suitcase Jake says

Thank you guys and gals , Fun Stuff ..Something is amiss with the Bills..when the pressure builds they seem to fade…like last year in playoffs.. But like they say … It only counts as 1 in the loss column.. Still think they can win the AFC EAST Title…they have lots of talent and good defence … My Cowboys looked great but lots of tough teams on their Schedule…I was impressed with the Patsies second half comeback against the Eagles, they almost had a chance to Win it at the end…

  27. Plan on a little whiplash next Sunday. Those embarrassed teams including the Bills are going to be super motivated to show they aren’t as bad as they looked week one. Seattle and the Vikings as well.
Pat’s fans are embarrassing themselves. Many joyous over a lot of positive things against the Eagles and a moral victory. But the mental errors continue. Next week would be a good opportunity to prove they can win a game there are not expected to win. Moral victories aren’t meant to be a weekly thing.
Week two game pick will involve all the games except Thursday. Straight up with four 2.5 point games and a Monday tie breaker twist.

My apologies. The summary I put together is a mess and confusing. Try to muddle through and I’ll fix it for next week.
For now triage includes clarification on a couple things. Total tie breaker score for only ONE Monday night game, either one. Secondly I failed to put the 2.5 point games in my so called entry form so don’t forget them (csg) as follows:

    Underdog specials
Las Vegas @ Buffalo Vegas Pick Worth 2.5
Seattle @ Detroit Seattle Pick Worth 2.5
San Francisco @ LA Rams LA Rams Pick Worth 2.5

Don’t forget to pick the Cleveland/Pittsburgh game in connection with the Monday night tie breaker. Just the winner you already picked your game for total points.
    Thanks!

PS-anyone watch Greg Bedard, acerbic, hyper critical beat writer for the Patriots? Great analyst, very down on the Pats these days but has all but guaranteed a Pat’s win. Says they’re run all over the Dolphins no matter who is included on the offensive line and will win handily.

I’ll take the win getting the Seattle extra points game correct but it’s pretty clear who had the best week picking winners…….Bobf. That was impressive well done.
NO TIE BREAKER NECESSAY, THANKS FOR PLAYING

  40. Thank you Mr. Courchesne for solving the problem and apologies for the drama.
I’ll do a better job for week three making the roll out less confusing and using the above summary exactly as it’s shown now without the arrows the were mucking it up.
If anyone wants to suggest changes just say what you have in mind and that’s what we’ll do. Otherwise it’s my intention to include all SUNDAY games on a straight up basis, continue to reward really big underdogs at 2.5 points and make Monday night the tie breaker game.
    Thanks for playing.

NFL PICK THE WINNERS WEEK 3

OK lets try this. Tier one fairly even games gets you one point to pick the winner. Tier two rewards you more for taking significant underdogs with 2.5 points. If you’re crazy enough to pick a third tier underdog and they win you earn 3.5 points.

    Just pondering the Pats:
So far the sports geeks can’t rave enough about certain teams. Miami has played the Pats close, no defense Chargers and a Denver team that gave up. The Chiefs lost to the Lions, unimpressive against the over rated Jags and beat up on the hapless Bears. Cowboys beat up on the two not so good NY teams and lost to the Cards.
Meanwhile the Pats slowed down Miami, played the Eagles tough and predictably beat the Jets. Two incredibly tough defenses, one good offense and one insanely good offense. Beat the one team they should have and were competitive against two top 4 teams in the power rankings.
Observation-Now it’s on to Dallas making it three top 6 teams in the power rankings in four games. After Dallas the insanity ends with only 4 games they will be big underdogs in.
So are the Pat’s really that bad off now?

  60. Thanks for saving my bacon Bobf, I’m taking the Giants 35.
We aren’t doing accumulative scores this year but from time to time it’s nice to know who is our leader. In terms of success in simply picking games that would be Suitcase Jake picking 27 Sunday games correctly. That’s a 68% success rate. From what I’ve observed of experts picking games straight up that’s right up their with the best.

  63. While i knew odds were against me picking pats yesterday, I tried to think positive. There was nothing positive yesterday for pats, sans a tidbit here or there. Only thing it proved to me was, pats are not even a 500 team, in its current configuration. Just terrible. And dallas rubbed pat’s noses in it.
Look for “it’s time for belechick” to go opinion pieces, coming to a sports column near you. Movin on from 2023 version……

  64. The Eagles, Miami and Cowboys all among the best in the NFL. Played two of them pretty tough. How about we see how they perform against teams in their own weight class like the Saints and Raiders the next two weeks before we write the obituary.
The natives are restless in Pat’s nation and the knives are out.
Much maligned Jets QB Zack Wilson thoroughly outplayed Mahomes yesterday as the Jets almost pulled off a huge upset. Maybe Mac can turn it around next week fingers crossed.

  65. I like your optimism doug.
    But another blow this morning.
Judon to have what appears to be season ending surgery. Still no word on gonzalez.
Gonna be tough even against 500 teams. Maybe they get an underdog win, maybe they dont. Right now even 500 isn’t looking good. We’ll see. One thing for sure, gonna be a lot of unrest in patriot nation sooner rather than later me thinks!

  66. That game against the Cowboys was about the worst game I have seen since Belechick took over coaching duties. The one player we had ranked in the top 100 NFL players was Judon and he is out. Gonzales was looking promising, and he went out injured. I have been a Mac supporter, kept saying it was the offensive coordinator in year 2, he didn’t look bad year 1. New wideouts every year. Just a bunch of excuses, Mac looked as bad as ever. throwing across his body to the other side of the field. I haven’t played football and I know you shouldn’t do that. He got away with it once, you know someone told him don’t do that again.

I agree the Patriot losses are to very good teams. They were competitive against the Eagles and Phins both home games. I couldn’t watch the second half of Sundays Cowboys game. I switched to Red Zone knowing if the Pats did anything worthwhile, they would cut to the game. They cut to the Pats game once in which the Pats kicker missed a field goal. The new kicker seems to do that often. Just never seemed to be in that game. It was a horrible spot, Dallas coming off a bad loss to the cardinals looking to get right. There just was no fight in the Patriots.

I honestly don’t know how to fix it. The Pats seem to think every player should take a hometown discount for the privilege of playing for the Patriots. They got away with it with Tom Brady in town and the team was in contention for Super Bowls. There aren’t a lot of talented players willing to play for less to play on a 500 team.

If they don’t win the next couple of games, we might as well go full rebuild and tank for draft pick. The problem is our shoddy draft record. Bargain bin free agent signings. It seems we miss more than hit. Figure out if Mac Jones is the QB. They have to make a decision on him after next season. There is nothing worse than finishing a game or two around 500. If you make the playoffs, it’s probably a road game against a good team you would need a lot of things to go your way to win. Looking over their schedule I can make an argument to get to 6 or 7 wins this season, which isn’t getting you anywhere. No playoffs and picking just late enough to not secure a top tier qb

I love your optimism, but Bill Belichick magic doesn’t seem to work without Brady at QB. That being said, I will probably pick them every week in this pickem. To pick against them doesn’t seem right.

  67. I’m no optimist and agree just about 100% with everything you guys are saying. My only point is we’re stuck with what we have for now and thinking strictly short term which would be New Orleans and Las Vegas. Get two wins then the knives get put away for a while. Two loses and you’d think the Kraft’s would finally be thinking moving on from Belichick. Split them and we remain in season purgatory with a direction still unclear.
Tell you one thing that act of Belichick’s in his pressers with the mumbling, cranky, non answers is so old it’s thread bare at this point. It’s one thing putting up with it when the team is winning all the time but when it’s an aged out coach the game has passed by it’s just sad.

  68. Csg, I love your line of “I honestly don’t know how to fix it” (not sarcasm at all, believe me)
But In the post Brady era, apparently, neither do the Pats.
Mac jones is good if there are great pieces around him. There are none.
No elite receivers, an ol thats just “meh”.
He spent so much time looking at the cowboys pass rushers on Sunday. Good, great qb’s “feel” them without looking. Looking at pass rushers, means he’s not looking at options on the field. Thats only one of a plethora of issues. Good quarterbacks put the team on their back and make things happen when it hits the fan. I dont think he will ever be able to do that from what I’ve seen.
I get it. Small body of work. Rookie year 1 (his best so far). Sucked yr 2 because of very suspect coaching and play calling ( so most of us think) I gave him a bye year 2 because of that.
This year, I’m outta byes on him. Same old stuff.
Sure. I’m unfair. Hes got nothing around him. Young guy. Playing better teams. Yada yada…
But I haven’t seen anything that shows me he can one day be elite. Carry a team while Rome burns down around him.
While the team has way more problems than mac jones alone, agreed, I think Ive seen enough from him to know he “aint the guy”. Irregardless if they win the next 2 or not.
And honestly, I dont know how to fix it either. But I got a couple of ideas, and it starts with mac, but sure doesnt end there.
In my eyes, this is year 3 of a rebuild post brady era. I’m no football coach, but I was under the assumption that by year 3 you should be at least trending in a positive direction. Sure. Played the eagles hard. But that dont matter, cause it still counts as a loss in the record book. Big whoop.
And like you, ill pick’em here cause I’ll support the patriots, home town team. But if I’m betting real money? Nah, maybe not so much….

  69. Mac Jones is getting crucified this week in the sports media. One opinion that was a bit of a change and gave me pause you can see here:

    https://www.bostonsportsjournal.com/2023/10/04/fdsportsbook–drink_ag1-bedard-patriots-podcast–video-was-dallas-loss-beginning-of-end-for-patriots-jones

Fast Eddie has a great weekend of picking taking down the win in the Pick 6 contest and a second in the NFL Pick the Winners. But it’s SC who is this weeks top prognosticator in football on the strength of the Jags upset in Buffalo bonus and edging out Fast Eddie picking the Falcons and the Saints correctly to Eddie’s Colts pick.
    No tie breaker necessary.
    Thanks for playing!

  83. Would that not be Bobf taking a victory lap with his usual good natured, velvet gloves approach? But is it premature?
There’s always something to look forward to for the diehard. The Pat’s have played 4 top tier defenses in 5 games. The one that wasn’t a top tier defense was Miami the one with the high powered offense. Yesterday they played the Saints without their two best defensive players out for the season and a patchwork defensive secondary.
The good news is each week is a new season. The Raiders defense the worst the Pats have played so far this year so maybe they can score a few points. Several defensive backs on injured reserve may become available in the near future. Should the Pats lose badly then the silver lining is this. Instead of the mediocre purgatory we’ve been in, the Kraft’s may have no choice but to do a deal making this Belichick’s last season. If you saw Belichick in his post game presser yesterday perhaps you saw what I did. His usual mumbling, snarky non answers but this was different. More a burnt out old man without a clue on how to fix his broken, dispirited team.
    On to the Raiders!

  84. I think josh mcdanials will have a solid plan for pats.
But even if pats blow out raiders, im in the camp that it probably dont mean much.
I think pats may give mac a week off here. With pats OL in a shambles, mac isnt gonna be any better. He will be looking at the rush, and josh knows it. Hell, every coach in the nfl knows it now.

  85. I’m taking the Pat’s to win this week. Mainly because the team beat writers are absolutely freaking out, Seems a bit over done. It’s not like there aren’t other really bad teams. Sometimes they snap back at you and bite you in the back side like with the Cards beating Dallas.
Agree Jones needs a mental health week off he’s just broken at this point. More importantly the team has no faith in him. The defense feeling like whatever they do he’ll erase it with a turnover.

  86. Suitcase Jake says

I THINK I CALLED IT. BILL TO NANTUCKET IN 24… IT WAS TOM NOT BILL AND BIG EGO, SHAMEFUL HOW HE CONDUCTS HIMSELF AT PRESS CONFERENCES , HORRIBLE TREATMENT OF THOSE TRYING TO COVER THE TEAM …26 -29 WITHOUT TOM… HOPE HE GETS CANED BEFORE HE CAN PASS DON SHULA’S RECORD .. THE WHEELS HAVE FALLEN OFF AND THANK’S TO BILL’S EGO YOU HAVE ONE OF THE WORST TEAMS IN THE NFL…

  87. I missed the game last Sunday. I thought about seeking out some highlights on Youtube but how can there be any Pats highlights in a 34 to nothing game.

I don’t know if you can sit Mac this week and go back to him next week. I think if you sit him it will be tough to start him again. Any confidence he and his teammates may have left for him will be lost. Maybe they can get cute and tweak an injury late in the week. I would go Cunningham. I don’t think Zappe has shown any improvement over Jones. Let’s try a mobile quarterback maybe the offensive line wouldn’t be as big an issue as it has been with a running qb. I don’t think it is all Jones but the qb is going to take the lion share of the blame.

I do think they should just go full tank. This team is so flawed they have no chance at making a run. Let’s sell some players come trade deadline. Stockpile some draft picks. The more picks we have the better chance we have to hit on one of them. I want to see Pats tickets late in the season going for less than 20 dollars on the secondary market and not selling on a good weather day.

It would be nice it the games were closer. There isn’t much entertainment in being down by multiple scores in the first quarter when the team can’t score points. The game is over, everyone knows it.

  88. Csg;
I liked a lot of your points. However, I read a response to a question on another site yesterday that addresses some of the things we discussed here. Not sure if any agree, but an interesting take on trying out Malik by one writer:

    Ans:
Just based on what I saw in training camp, I think fans are more intrigued by the idea of Malik Cunningham than what Malik Cunningham actually is as a player. It’s understandable. Cunningham had the nicest drive of the preseason, the kind of drive that has been completely absent for most of the regular season, but as someone who also watched all of training camp, there weren’t many other flashes by Cunningham at quarterback. Most often his role at quarterback was giving the defense read option looks that certainly helped them do an okay job containing Jalen Hurts in Week 1. However, Cunningham was otherwise with the receivers and to this point, as a member of the practice squad, he’s remained a receiver and probably a scout team quarterback. While he’s athletic, he never showcased an ability to throw the ball as a pocket passer in my view. Like everyone else, I wish that they had a version of Lamar Jackson sitting on the practice squad who could suddenly spark the offense, but it’s a really big stretch.
We could maybe discuss Will Grier as an option as he continues to get up to speed, but in my opinion, even with how bad Mac and the offense have looked, Mac Jones remains the best option for this team at quarterback. I’m not sure how to get him back on track, how to reinstall a sense of confidence in his protection so he can get more comfortable in the pocket and not looking at the rush. I suspect it starts with the offensive line coming together but once again that group went through some injury issues this week that have put their continuity in question. That said, I don’t think the team will continue to tolerate the rate of turnovers from Mac, if he doesn’t at least clean those up, Zappe will get a real chance sooner than later. It could come as soon as this weekend, as I think giving Mac a week off might be on the table to help him reset.

Above from Patriots unfiltered mailbag, in response to starting Malik

  89. Bill O’Brien in his presser yesterday said Cunningham played a little QB mimicking Saints QB Taysom Hill last week but mostly he’s been working out as a receiver. It’s refreshing to listen to O’Brien behave like a normal NFL coach answering questions as opposed to snarky, mumbles Belichick with his combative non answers.

Question: Bill, you said that you were going to start from scratch and make the changes you think will improve the teams performance. Can you be more specific what those changes will be?

Belichick: We’re going to make the changes we think will be in the teams best interest and we think will improve the team.

O’Brien also said there is no mental health time off for a QB other then a day off. It’s a grind and that’s the gig in no many words. Mac Jones will be starting and Belichick mumbled that no changes were being made at QB today.

  90. Saw that by O’Brien today.
And he as much as eliminated Malik as a qb for this or any weekend in short term.
He as much said they are sticking with mac.
They need a miracle offensive line at this point for mac to feel comfortable. Dont know how that happens as they are banged up themselves.
The pats really need to win here to build morale for sure. And while I’ll pick them, I dont have a clue how this one is gonna go. And while this is no top tier matchup by any means, if your a patriot fan, to me, it’s beginning to feel like one. A defining moment for them perhaps.

I’m placing my first bet with Betbucks.
I’m putting $10 Betbucks down on the Patriots Sunday with the condition I be given 5 points. That’s more then the latest line which is plus 3 but that’s what I’m willing to wager.

  102. Some reinforcements for Patriots. Malik Cunningham signed a 3 year deal and moved to the 53 man roster from the practice squad. He has been taking most of his reps as wide receiver but played QB in college and in the preseason this year. He might be a good change of pace/wildcat threat. Should Mac Jones struggle I would be in favor of putting Malik in over Zappe.

Speedy Tyquan Thornton activated off IR. Could be the deep threat to keep defenses honest maybe respect the deep ball a little.

Pats WR JuJu Smith Schuster is out with concussion so we will not get the direct comparison of Meyers v Smith Shuster. Jakobi Meyers was the Pats leading receiver the last 3 years was signed by Las Vegas in free agency. Juju Smith was signed to the Patriots for roughly the same money and is considered Myers direct replacement. To date, Meyers has far outperformed Juju.

Offensive line is in shambles. There is only one starter healthy David Andrews. Strange and Reif out. Brown and Onwenu are listed as questionable. When healthy the Pats offensive line is an area of concern. Raider Maxx Crosby may be looking at the game of his career type of day.

Chandler Jones was released by the Raiders after a series of odd behavior. He does have some legal issues attached to him. He would be the inexpensive turn around type player the Pats like and have done well with, in the past. Jones was a pro bowl player for the Pats 2012-15 has mentioned the Pats in some recent social media posts.

Pats play at 4 in Las Vegas against former coach QB and WR. Should be an interesting game.

  103. Great facts and commentary much appreciated.
At some point when you’ve played so badly something kicks in. Pride, survival instinct, worry about your next contract. The result is the team plays over their heads and turns in a good game. Maybe not even win but shows they’re really motivated to turn things around.
We know what happened the last two weeks. They turn in another incompetent mess of a game sleep walking through it that would have far reaching consequences to the team and managements reputation far beyond one more loss. Not just historically bad for the Pats, a historically bad fall from greatness in the history of the NFL. A team that as a unit is hopeless and has simply given up in consecutive games.
I certainly can’t conceive that happening but if it does it sure would be something.

  104. Suitcase Jake says

    BILLS …….thank you

  105. This should be an interesting week in pats nation. Or maybe we should we just dust off the old sox mantra for what seemed like forever. “Wait till next year”. Only problem I see, is a turnaround will take way longer than a year. Just too many issues.

  106. Well that stunk. Too many penalties. I am not sure all of them were warranted but I am sure Vegas fans could complain about the refs too. When you are losing to a backup your team cut a year ago. Maybe it’s time to take a good long look at what we are doing here. I did see Rookie WR Kayshon Boutte was a healthy scratch today. He promptly posted “Free ME” to his instagram account and then deleted it. So, he may not be long for a Patriots uniform. In the fourth quarter down by 2 scores the pats take 10 minutes to drive down the field leaving about 3.5 minutes on the clock. They almost got a couple of delay of game penalties. Hey guys lets go here. I know you haven’t been in a game in a few weeks, but you were in this one, A little clock management guys. Malik Cunningham had a few plays. Seemed like they were poorly thought out and did more to get the offense out of sync than the Vegas D. Parker alligator armed a perfect ball late in the game then took no accountability on the play. A catch there probably gives them a chance at a winning field goal. Grumpy Bill no answer press conference after the game. Mac taking all the blame again. No one standing up for him. I think there is plenty of blame to spread around, I doubt this team is qb change away from competing for wins.

The good news. The game was not over at half time. The Pats scored a touchdown. Actually two of them. Something not seen in a few weeks. The Pats are not going to have to work hard to lose games and tank for a draft pick. It should come quite easily. There is not one game I think the Pats will be favored in again this season. To my knowledge the Pats are not mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. Sundays have officially freed up. Combined with the Pats disaster my fantasy team has scored the second highest points in league on the season and managed to win 2 games. I am leading the league in points scored against by a large margin. Defense wins championships.

On to the Bills next week. If I may make a suggestion to any Pats fans it would be pick a college team and start watching football on Saturdays after the Tri track races., of course.

  108. Csg;
    All good points.
After brady left, and the cam newton experiment ran its course, I was under the impression that the rebuilding had began. 2(+. -) years ago.
So what are the pats gonna do now? Rebuild?
Wish someone could explain that to me, as I thought thats what was being done the last couple of years.
Ah, the cap space debacle’s. Is that really even a topic for discussion anymore? You listen to all the pro talk people and ex coaches, and they all say, no matter what, there are ways to work around the cap. If someone wants a guy, they can get him.
The patriots cap space from last year is in the form of a lighthouse with a “celebrity du jour” bell ringer on game day. I guess that beats a competitive team these days. Jmo.

  109. I think we’re headed in the right direction. OK not right direction but definitely a direction. 1-5 now and likely to be 1-7 after the Bills and Miami baring some miracle turn around. That puts the Pats in the running for the lowest draft pick since Bledsoe and that turned out pretty good.
The key is Belichick can’t be making the pick. All the pundits have lists of Belichick’s failures from draft picks to free agent signings to inexplicable non re-signings like Jacobi Meyers and contract extensions on mediocre players. Like 3 year, 33 million dollar butter fingers DeVonte Parker yesterday.
Build the statue, honor Belichick with a big ceremony, make it look like stepping away is his idea but rebuilding can only start with a new GM and coaching team. You mention Cam Newton he was the canary in the coal mine. He was last minute, on the cheap which is Belichick’s business model.
If the Patriot Way existed, something I’m thinking was more the Tom Brady way at least as far as offense goes it no longer exists.
Sometimes the wrong direction can end up forcing changes that go in the right direction. Belichick cannot be trusted to lead a meaningful rebuild. Taking the GM job away is not enough. The entire organization is packed with his friends and family, it all has to go and start fresh. The focus needs to be back on the team moving forward and not Belichick hanging on to break records including the most losses which he’s closing in on. Ranked thirteenth in win percentage which is falling also.

  110. Well doug, you tell bill he’s no longer gm, and I think he walks anyway. Will kraft do it, and then, whats next? Is there current staff that are good draft talent evaluators? And all the rest that goes with it, with a house cleaning?
Gonna be another looong rebuild, and yes, appears that needs to happen.
But yeah, I am grateful we had him, brady, and the teams. Great ride.

  111. Suitcase Jake says

There was a TIME NOT LONG AGO, that the Patriots would play mistake free , no DUMB PENALTIES … Don’t beat YOURSELF… There was a man
Named Tom Brady who was a TREMENDOUS field GENERAL who worked the clock to perfection to score to end the first half …. Then come out on first drive of second half and score again before the Enemy got a chance to touch the ball…. You SCORED TWICE…. NOW its hard to watch the delay of game , Motion, false starts.. PENALTIES … NOW YOU ARE THAT TEAM THAT BEATS THEMSELVES…..YOU are now that team that gets all the dumb penalties…. Can’t control the line of scrimmage like in the years past , can’t protect the Quarterback long enough to THROW THE DEEP PASS… he’s lucky if he can hit a 7 or 8 yard out or shallow cross pattern…
The defense is lost without Matthew Judon out on the EDGE… Plus they are sucking wind cuz they are ON THE FIELD the majority of the game…..If you just take a seat on the bench and grab a drink and some air, The OFFENCE stinks and goes 3 & OUT and you punt , Then you get no time for adjustments or time to catch your breath,,, Right back out on the Field again , Believe me you get gassed really quick….The best defense is an OFFENCE THAT CAN CONTROL THE CLOCK AND GO ON LONG DRIVES while the defense sits on the bench …. ALL THOSE STRONG PATS defenses had the ABILITY TO BE FRESH with GENERAL BRADY leading them down the field, using lots of clock, putting up large point totals almost every game….The Pats were a SWISS CLOCK at one time … Now you are bumbling semi pros looking like the OLD OLD pats in 60-70-80’s ..
IT WAS TOM- NOT BILL- EGO MANIAC- heading to NANTUCKET SOON..

  112. I am not sure losing Bill would be the worst thing that could happen. He has missed regularly on draft picks, The absolute worst thing that could happen is we finish with a top 5 pick and Belichick would see value in an offensive guard so he trades down picks up a second rounder and picks the guard at 15 still much higher than anyone expected . You stock pile all these draft picks, what good does it do if you keep missing on hem. Bill Belichick the coach has been really let down by Bill Belichick the GM. There just isnt a lot of talent on the team. I agree you tell Bill Belichick he is no longer GM he is going to leave. The ego will not allow it to happen. There is no one on that staff that either isn’t related to him or going to follow him out that door. So, you are doing it at the end of the season. Maybe Bill OBrien would stay but he had some talented teams in Houston and never got them to the Super bowl mostly due to Tom Brady. He also traded d hopkins for the equivalent of a bag of used practice balls because he didnt want to pay him. Sounds like the Belichick way.

If Belichick goes, there are going to be a number of teams interested. He can pick one with a talented roster, like LA Chargers, and probably get them to a super bowl. Everything is already in place all he needs to do is coach. I do think he wants all the win records. So I think he would go somewhere else for 3 to 5 years to secure them. I think he would prefer to be on the east coast if he had his choice. I would say Giants would be ideal spot but I think they are in the same boat as the patriots. Heading for a rebuild and they signed their Jones to a big contract which will handcuff them for a couple of years. They also have offensive line issues. It is basically the same situation the Pats are in. Only he can blame someone else for messing it up.

This off season is going to be really interesting. Kraft said in his letter to season ticket holders that losing football would not be tolerated. The playoffs are expected and he would make changes if necessary. They are certainly losing at football right now. playoffs arent lookin

  113. Good comment. I don’t agree with the GM letting the coach down narrative that doesn’t explain away the poor execution, penalties nor the Patricia decision.
Really like the Chargers idea. Their defense is terrible so his addition would be a natural as long as he stays away from the offense. It’s win-win-win. Plus he gets to spend his golden years in a warmer climate and now that he’s unattached at this stage maybe hook up with a California gal. You know what they say; “I wish they all could be California girls”

  119. Pat’s Chat
-NFL trade deadline is October 31. By then the Pat’s likely to be 1-7. Do they throw in the towel, trade away assets for a rebuild next year or stand pat?

-Who will make the call on possibly divesting players for draft picks? Belichick would likely be motivated to win the games he could and keep the roster he has. Maybe even trade for a blue chipper. Enter the Kraft’s. Will they be thinking time for a change, veto Belichick and signal a change in direction coaching wise. If that happened would they tell GM Belichick to look to trade players for picks in 2024?

-Have the players given up on Belichick? What’s with Parker and Thornton jogging through routes when they know they aren’t getting the ball not exactly what you’d expect from a Belichick coached team. The penalties as well.

    – Is Jerod Mayo the new coach in waiting? If he is and the Kraft’s are getting nervous do they take him aside, ask him what he would like to see happen before the trading deadline? Who to keep, who to trade.

-Questions swirling around Mac Jones. Is he broken, experts say yes so antsy now he locks onto his target and can’t go through his progressions any more. Is his relationship with Belichick irreparable? Will either Belichick or Jones or both be gone by 2024? Would it make any sense to trade Mac Jones before the trading deadline and could they get anything for him? Have the players given up on Jones as a leader?

-Bill O’Brien- is he that bad an offensive coordinator? Or has he been given no real talent to coach, injuries decimating the lineup, Adrian Klemm the offensive line coach inept or Belichick interfering too much? Or all of the above.

-20 players listed on the injury report this week not including the two biggest defensive stars out for the season. Does the injury situation erase all the speculation above giving Belichick and his coaching team a Mulligan this year and nothing changes dramatically in 2024?

-How hard is it to pick games straight up? Turns out very hard. Mike Florio is a nationally known sports guy who works the NBC Sunday night games and has his own PFT Podcast. He’s picked all the games six weeks into the season and has a success rate of 63%. Excluding Thursday and Monday night games our man Suitcase Jake beats Florio at 64% over the course of the 81 Sunday games we’ve picked. No one else comes close the next best success rate 57%. The question is should we start handicapping Jake to make it a fair fight?

-One thing good about football the games are not cancelled when it rains. I don’t know about Stafford but it’s in Tolland county. For the period May through September (racing season) 35.23 inches of rain have fallen, 172% over the average of 20.51 inches. Take June through September it’s worse 193% over normal. At two to 5 inches at a clip I envy all you with modern poured concrete foundations. My pre Revolutionary War old house so old it has a meat smoker in the attic reminds me how old it is every event as I fight to keep the water out on the roof and in the basement. This keeps up we are so screwed when it snows.

    Comments invited please.

  120. Well Doug, there are no real outstanding pieces left out on the field for pats.
The rest that show any “up sides” are relative rookies. So trading away any young potential you have, if any, what will you get in return? 6th rounders at best? And you maybe losing a potential good future piece, at a relatively low cost, giving you more cap room.
Maybe hunter henry would have gotten you some value, but then what? Now hes injured. Same as Judon. Casts a lot of doubt. Stevenson? Take away the heart of your run game and pin it on rookies from draft next year if you can get someone? I dont know. But i do know this. We need a half of dozen first round picks next year. And with that, not all pan out. For me, its already a wash this year. The far and few between bright spots I was looking forward to this year, (see gonzalez a draft pick that looks like it is reaping huge rewards) is gone. Maybe a piece here or there, to trade, with limited return. Why try to get anybody at this point this year? Who the heck would want to be on this squad?
I say, play it out. If kraft is ever gonna step up, now is the time to tap bill on the shoulder, and let him know the party is over. He can start perusing other opportunity’s, and krafts can get on to the business of figuring out what the coaching staff will look like next year.
I think that will go a long ways with players that want to bolt as well at this point.
One thing for certain, this all needs to happen before free agency and the draft, if its gonna happen. At this point, as Rick Patino said when Celtics were in the dumps, “the negativity in this town sucks. Larry Bird aint walking through that door!”
Just way too many holes, with little to no value on trade market. Let the guys with expiring contracts go, maybe trade them now, get what you can get, because like Myers, they are not gonna want to sign here for next year and beyond, no matter what is offered to them, at this point, unless team wins out. Yeah. Right.

  122. Thanks boys, good commentary.
Really like the tapping on the shoulder reference. If the Kraft’s have any intention of making a change now is the time to start the process. They’re businessmen, Belichick’s a big boy (except at pressers where he’s pouting). If they do it now’s the time for Belichick to put feelers out. The chargers would be perfect. All they need is what Belichick has which is defense. Heard the Commanders mentioned as well they do have some potential.
The fam has been getting together for Pat’s games a long time. We used to expect to win. Third and 12 with Brady at QB odds favored a first down. Now we can see the benefit of Pat’s loses to get the best draft pick and hoping Mac just doesn’t throw a pick on third and 12.
Oh well the beer and pizza still tastes as good.

  123. Belichek signs “lucrative “ contract extension this past off season. Held quiet, and one of the best kept secrets of off season. I’ll say.
That kinda changes the narrative on everything eh?

  124. The skinny on that new contract looks something like this. Kraft is cheap on players. Kraft gets to say money is never a problem for good players and Belichick takes the heat as GM when they aren’t signed. That’s not my opinion that’s been floated by a Pat’s beat writer Michael Holley and it does sound plausible.
It’s ridiculous giving Belichick a “lucrative” new contract after the 2022 mess. Or completely logical for a cheap owner who doesn’t want to be outed as cheap and is willing to pay a GM/coach to take the heat. 25 million for a coach/GM that can save that amount on one player is a bargain.
Kraft plays this game as the good guy with a reputation for philanthropy that will give Belichick whatever he needs. Belichick gives him what he needs all right. A guy that made him the most successful owner in NFL history and now all the power he gave him is still paying off. Well worth his big new contract simply to take the blame for a low budget roster while he stays about the slings and arrows saying “not my fault”. If Belichick somehow can turn it around then Kraft wins on that score as well.
Congratulations to Fast Eddie for picking the Pat’s to turn in a miracle game today we were joyous in our family game gathering. But it doesn’t really change much does it? Judgement day will come after game 17. You want to believe something has changed fundamentally then I’m rooting for you but to me the Pat’s are still systemically broken.

Fast Eddie this weeks big winner proving that in the face of withering pessimism about the Patriots, loyalty does pay off from time to time.

  126. Maybe.
Or kraft was sold that this is the year things were going to turn around. New offensive coordinator, lock down corner draft. Ju-ju to replace myers. On and on. So maybe kraft, as loyal to his brother bill as he seems to be, the man who brought all the rings, wanted to trust in bill. He just doesn’t want to “be the guy”, or is loyal to bill to a fault. Or maybe kraft just doesn’t know how to get it done. What next? Where does kraft go to? I dont know. But, You could be spot on Doug.
But did anybody watch the patriots hall of fame on saturday? Hugs and smiles galore! Except, between bill and robert. Very forced and stiff to me between those 2. Not good body language at all. Cursory. Jmo

  127. No I didn’t see the Hall of Fame ceremony but found your interpretation of it very interesting and I’d bet accurate. If you get a chance could you watch Belichick’s post game presser and render an opinion please. Specifically on his response to the question about Mac Jones performance.
    Thanks!

  128. Well, I watched the presser, and I thought for the most part, its bill being bill. Very careful not to heap too much praise on any one person. All about the team effort. As for the mac question if I heard correctly, it did seem he had more praise for Stevenson reception and run, the Henry reception and run, and all the plays in between, on that drive. At the the end of it all, all I heard was the usual, “yeah mac did a good job there”. And the question really was about how mac handled the game pressure and thinking on his feet in this game, vs what he was doing in prior games. At least thats the way I interpreted the question. And of course, Bill said nothing to address that. So I’m really not sure what to make of the response. But it wasn’t a resounding vote of confidence in that area of question was the way I took it. Maybe I’m reading into something that may not be there though. Guess we will see as the week progresses if we get any bread crumbs.
And I’m in agreement with you. While nice to see yesterday, they are still very broken. I think miami will come out screaming towards the pats this coming weekend, after the beatdown the fish took from eagles sunday night.

  129. Thanks that’s exactly the way I saw it but I’ll kick it up a notch.
Jones went 25 for 30, 272 yards, 2 TD’s, no interceptions for a QB rating of 127 and won the game coming from behind as the clock wound down overcoming Bourne’s fumble. Would it have killed Belichick to give a kid under so much pressure lately a little credit? He had a career day with a couple big time NFL passes and a game winning drive. Sure it’s about the team and they did all play well but Belichick lit up talking about Peppers so it’s not like he doesn’t single out players for praise when asked about them. That is if he likes them and he sure doesn’t like Mac Jones.
How you get to a place where you have a struggling starting QB under siege, you can’t decide who your backup is since there are no good choices and you can’t even give the starter an at-a-boy when he has a career day shows why this team is broken.

  130. Good catch doug.
But I honestly think Bill O’Brien is mac’s “football father”now.
But good observation. And you would think belichek’s “pick” that has a good day, you would be a little more upbeat when speaking about it.
Thats why it did not sound like a “resounding vote of confidence “ to me. So i agree. Hmmmmm

  131. Suitcase Jake says

Kraft better go in for a little check up ,…For some Sunday Splash! reports, there’s an intriguing question that needs to be answered.

    Who threw the stone?

In delivering Sunday morning’s news that Patriots coach Bill Belichick “quietly” signed a “lucrative” contract during the offseason, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media explained that Belichick’s arrangement with the Patriots is one of the most closely-guarded secrets in the league. So how did any information about the contract come to light? Either Rapoport donned a Hamburglar costume and struck gold (or ground beef), or someone specifically handed it to him, with the goal of getting the information out as the Patriots were on the verge of what most assumed incorrectly would be yet another loss.

Common sense points to the latter. And, after thinking it through over the past 24 hours, I believe Belichick himself wanted to slam the door on the growing talk that he could or should be fired during the season.

If the Patriots wanted to send that message, owner Robert Kraft would simply need to say, “There will be no coaching change during the season.” Kraft could say the same thing as to the possibility of a coaching change after the season. He has not yet done so.

The leak also could be interpreted as a message by Belichick to the Patriots and the rest of the world that he won’t be walking away. The word “committed” was used in the report. In other words, Belichick’s not quitting or retiring. “If you want me to go, you’ll have to pay me.”

In the end, whatever the buyout might be won’t stop Kraft from making the change. It’s a cost of doing business. A parting gift. An inevitable expense to be encountered when finally making a change.

Yes, money is money. But it’s all a business expense and a write-off and the Patriots are doing incredibly well and Kraft will barely bat an eye if he owes Belichick the balance of his contract, whatever the buyout might be.

Without knowing exactly what the buyout is, it’s impossible to attach any meaning whatsoever to yesterday’s news. But it accomplished its intended goal. Others repeated it with no scrutiny or analysis, presuming for themselves and their audiences that Belichick isn’t going anywhere, any time soon.

So, yes, he has a “lucrative” contract. Every successful NFL head coach does. And, yes, the deal covers multiple years. Again, few good NFL coaches are in the last year of their contracts. For the report to have any relevance to the question of whether the contract would keep Kraft from not keeping Belichick, we’d need to know the specific dollars that Kraft would have to spend to make a change.

Until someone deliberately leaks that information for a future Sunday Splash! report, we’ll assume that Belichick’s contract is not an impediment to Kraft making a change whenever he wants, if that’s what he wants to do.
We will see if this contract keeps Bill planted in Foxboro ….?????

  132. Another great analysis and different veiw.
    Suitcase, nice job as well.
At the end of day, we are all just along for the ride. But great take there as well.
    Another, “who knows”?

  133. I agree that was a great comment from the traveling man. Very interesting how the leak of a contract sat for a day or two then all of a sudden the source became and issue and “lucrative” a focus point. If indeed the leak came from Belichick all the more interesting considering his answer in the presser saying he would not discuss his contract in his unique smug, self righteous way.

    For the Pat’s optimist’s

-They turned a corner? The offensive line solidified with the return of Strange and Onwenu moved to right guard?? Jack Jones returned at corner and JC Jackson starting to get his feet back under him as a starter? Pop Douglas and Bourne highlighted. Pharaoh Brown can catch and block at TE joining Henry and Gesicki who couldn’t block Taylor Swift moved to spot receiver duty. Parker and Smith Schuster mostly sitting based on non production. The entire team with more confidence in themselves and the QB?
-After Miami the Pat’s only have the Chiefs that could be considered elite. The Bills could be in that category but surely not based on the way they played last Sunday. The rest of the games against teams with clear weaknesses. In fact the Pat’s and Jets both played the hardest part of their schedules. The Bills and Miami still to play several games against very good teams.
-Why is Miami rated so highly? Their 5 wins against teams a combined 8-25. The only two good teams they played the Bills and Eagles they lost to. I’ll be taking them to win straight up but if the Pat’s indeed have turned a corner that -9.5 spread seems ridiculous.

    For the Pat’s Pessimists

-on to Miami a black hole for the Pat’s traditionally with the warm weather and laid back atmosphere putting a damper on their competitive juices.
-was the Bills game a turning point? Or simply a Bills team in a downward spiral with some critical players injured they haven’t adjusted to yet and a fired up home crowd desperate to show their support for anything positive?
-The Pat’s got off to a quick start against the Bills an ideal situation for them as their game plan held up. Speedy Miami at home get up fast, the Pat’s game plan goes in the toilet and they return to miscues and turnovers playing from behind?

I’m guessing the Pat’s turn back into pumpkins in Miami.

  134. Doug;
Not trying to brat anything to death, or bore anyone, but I thought this was an interesting take on mac jones from Bill O’Brien this week, vs the conversation we had about Belichek’s comments post game. Forgive me if you already saw this:

Bill O’Brien when asked about Mac:

“I think he did a really good job. He’s only a third-year player. You aren’t talking about a guy that’s been around for 12 years. Every game is a learning situation for him. Certainly, he has a lot of experience relative to his rookie year and last year, but he’s still a young player.”
“He got us into the right plays on that last drive and did a really nice job, and the guys around him did a really nice job,” O’Brien continued. “I think that was good for our team to do that. This week’s a different game, and we have to be ready for this game.”

  135. I watch O’Brien every week. Mainly because he reminds me how a sincere, respectful coach can answer questions, not give anything away and not be a jerk like Belichick.
I did see that, was wondering if you did as well and here you are complete with the quote. I know this is a racing site but these exchanges of information and perspectives have been really interesting. Thanks!

  151. Commanders-3-5, they just dealt away two of their top defensive players looking toward next year. The coach generally thought to be on his way out. A new owner with his own philosophy looking to 2024 to start to implement it based more on analytics with modern era coaching.

Patriots-chose not to trade away good players that they will likely not sign for next year signaling they want to win this year conceding nothing to the future. Favored at home they now have a game they can actually win entering the softer part of the schedule.

If any that is close to true how much is riding on this game for Belichick and his future? How important is it for the team to look competent against a team that for all intents and purposes is not prioritizing winning this year and wasn’t even that good before they let a couple top players go? Worse yet what if the Pat’s not only lose but look horrible doing it?
Is all that just drama or does winning this game have far more meaning then a W or L on the schedule?

  155. Fast Eddie says

Guys, I’d love to explain my secret except I really don’t know what I’m doing when it comes to picking football games, I pick either who I like or who I don’t like the least, all in the context of what outcome might help the Pats, although that might be a too-far-gone thought at this point.

  156. Two sayings come to mind fast eddie

    1) dont change what you are doing, as it works!
    2) never tell the pitcher he is pitching a no hitter!

All good, nice work. Way better than me, thats for sure!
Thanks for keeping this alive Doug.

  157. Thanks to all you guys for playing!!

  158. Avert your eyes and cover your ears it’s getting uglier. With no injury and a need for cornerbacks rogue player JC Jackson not even making the trip to Germany with the Patriots. Film review experts noting casual route running and players giving up on plays. Mac Jones checking out of plays then failing to find the open guy the audible was supposed to go to. Throwing dimes and missing receivers badly that are wide open and he with good protection.
The situation screaming for a back up QB to take over but there is no qualified backup to take over.
As impossible as it may seem, the team has completely lost faith in Belichick and the coaching staff and they’ll pretty much be phoning it in the rest of the season. Or will pride take over and they play a good game Sunday in Germany?
Sorry but I think Kraft’s an old man who can’t even envision a rebuild, screwed up on Brady and doesn’t want to be the guy to fire the man that made him the most successful owner in league history. He’s in cahoots with Belichick who keeps the budget in check that he can point to when things don’t go right while prattling on about money not being a problem.
The Patriot Way at this point is just management wanting to get to the off season. Hoping the fan base cools down, they move the deck chairs around on the Titanic again and it’s business as usual. The scariest part is Belichick has the final say on a top 5 draft pick.

    That commentary nailed it.
My only additional piece would be the brady vs belechick debate.
I’ve always said, that they were like lennon and mccartney. Gelled together.
I’ve altered that now after watching the HOF ceremony this year. THE MAN was Scarneccia.
You could tell. It was he and Brady imo for those years.
I’m glad Brady went to Tampa. He got another ring, brought a championship to a city so desperately craving he, and it.
Had he stayed here, he would have had no pieces. He would have spent even more time on his ass. He would have ended as the “guy who did not know when to call it quits” scenario.
Great for him. Sucks for us. We are back to the “Boston Patriots” era…………
And I’ve always said, that you gotta support your team and local guys. Even if a team is a sub par, and they are trying the best they can, you gotta support them. Give me effort. But no effort from management on down? Then how can I support a no effort, if you build a lighthouse they will come, team.

If you have Draft Kings or any other of those gambling deals put some bucks on the Pats to win. The players are not going to want to embarrass themselves in Europe. I’m kidding about betting on them that would not be wise. However if they perform like an actual NFL team like Belichick sounded like an actual NFL coach for one presser then I’m thinking this will be a W for sure.

Sorry guys I made a careless error losing the results that were ready to post with a click. I’ll do it again later but for now can say Bobf (9.5) edged out Suitcase Jake (9) via his Browns bonus pick with csg (8.5) coming in third.

  168. No problem doug. It happens.
But i really wanted to chime in with, did you see where it was just reported that the pats are releasing jack jones? Smell test anyone?
No jc jackson to Germany due to missing team meeting, gonzalez gone for season due to injury, now jack jones? I thought the OL line was thin but holy crap, corners now thinner? Nad just goes to worse in patriot nation. I must say, not too surprised about jones after last week and this. Smell test anyone?

  169. Relied on spell check. Should have thought better on that one. Sorry guys….

  170. Hadn’t heard that and I have to say I’m just beyond disappointed at this stage with everything going wrong. In the end it just boils down to another wasted pick albeit later round but still he was supposed to have real promise. It’s another misfire for Belichick but it’s worse then that. Players completely disrespecting him maybe because they’ve lost all confidence.

  171. 🏈NFL Pick the Winner Week 10 Results🏈 Bobf Wins by a Nose says

    🏈NFL Pick the Winner Week 10 Results🏈

Seems only appropriate that before releasing this weeks results we observe a moment in silence for Mac Jones career. Once the promising rookie who lead the Pats to the playoffs and was picked for the Pro Bowl may have earned himself a permanent seat on the bench as a backup. His inexplicable pass was arguably the worst goal line muff since the Seahawks decided to throw an ill advised pass at the goal line as time expired costing them a Super Bowl win to none other then the Pats. The lucky Colt who caught the perfect pass seemed so confused by his good fortune couldn’t decide what to do run or drop to the ground.
Rest in peace Mac Jones career as QB1.

Once again Suitcase Jake the most successful game picker but Bobf squeaks out a win with his Browns underdog pick.

In the way of what if’s, Mac Jones likely cost csg the win 🤬 for the week by missing his wide open man for a touchdown that would have landed csg right on top of the big three point bonus.

  172. For the record, my score this week is about what I was expecting most of the time, but it’s still fun! Congrats to the winner and podium finishers, and thanks Doug and Shawn for keeping this going!

  173. You know Doug, I was really pulling for Mac. I made all the excuses. Defensive coaches calling offense. No offensive line. No real wide receivers. On and on. I cant defend him no more. He is scared s—t in the pocket, as he keeps looking at his offensive line. He is just shell shocked, mostly of his own doing at this point. No the Patriots aren’t good. But I feel Mac is worse than a bad team at this point.
I’m not even gonna blame Bill B, other than he drafted him. The chewing out of Mac on the sidelines Sunday by Bill O’Brian at this point, has told me all I need to know now.
    Yes Doug, agree, RIP. Mac.
So I feel Zappe is not the answer, and Grier is not up to speed. But play them. As well as all the other rookies and youngsters. Lets see who pans and who doesn’t. Why not? As a Patriot fan, at least that would give me more interest, than what they are doing now.
The only thing this team knows at this point for sure, is any free agent on this team this year, is probably gonna bail………

  174. I feel like i am at a complete disadvantage in this game. I refuse to pick against the patriots even though I know I should most weeks. This next week may be the only shot I get at winning one of these. And perhaps against the Giants with Will Grier at the helm. Guys I am beginning to think that maybe the Patriots might miss the playoffs this year……anyway how bout them Bruins and Celtics.

  175. For me, history is repeating itself to a degree. When I was a kid in the 60s/70s, the pats and red sox were terrible and the bruins and celtics ruled. In the 2000s the winning shifted. Now it’s back to my childhood days. CSG, I feel your pain, I won’t pick against them either. Can we get someone to explain to Mac that he needs to keep his head moving after he decides to pass? If he needsto wait a second or two he stares the at the reciever and the defense knows where the ball is going.

  184. Congrats SC! Well done.
Now my fellow football fans, who starts the Pats game? Jones, Zappe or Grier?
Wild card question. Will jones be benched and not on roster with Zappe starting and Grier elevated to backup?
And, at this point, does any of it matter?
As for the rest of the team….
Play the “kids”. Lets see if anything shakes out for the future. Jmo

  185. I surely don’t have an answer on the QB situation but I do have something to get off my chest about the entire Patriots situation currently.
I’ll admit it, I watch too many off the Pats beat writers shows on Youtube. Bedard, Perry, Felgar, Holly, Curran, Lazar and a more. Mostly I’m in wonderment about everything that’s swirling around the team now. Dan Orlovsky suggested Belichick leaving is a done deal and the landing spot already determined. Everyone else has an opinion on that opinion and many onto what QB to draft. Or maybe not even a QB build an offensive line first like Detroit then worry about the QB. Mac’s got PTSD and is broken, Bill O’Brien says it’s the NFL he doesn’t believe in that so does that mean anything? The Giants this Sunday otherwise known as the race to the bottom for the best draft pick. Go Pat’s errrr Giants? It’s so confusing.
Meanwhile back at the presser Belichick’s response to the question of which QB will start on Sunday goes something like this: “I told everyone on the team to be ready”. Pressed again same answer. Boy I won’t miss that when he’s gone.
    Patriots draft history

    2018 Wynn, Michel, Dawson
    2019 Harry, Williams, Wynovich
    2020 Dugger, Oche, Jennings
    2021 Mac Jones, Barmore, Perkins
    2022 Strange, Thornton, Marcus Jones
    2023 Gonzalez, White, Mapu

Is that satisfactory? Of all those players how many have been consistently productive vs the number that are no longer on the team, often injured or a yearly question mark to simply make the team? Who’s the best number one Dugger, defensive backfield? Also look at the number of offensive players drafted in the first three rounds how many of those have been successes. Michel was productive for basically the year that he wasn’t injured. First rounder Wynn never lived up to the first round status, often injured then checked out mentally. Strange can’t pass protect, Thornton is injured all the time and can’t run routes properly and Jones is……..who’s starting on Sunday?
You tell me is that normal? If Jones struggled last year and you end up with Zappe and Grier a backups does that show any foresight at all on the offensive side?
If none of it makes sense how is the guy making those decisions still allowed to make the draft picks and roster choices? More importantly how confident are you he’ll make good use of the top five pick the Pat’s are likely to get if he remains the GM?
For all we that are advanced in age we have our memories of the good times. Those will have to be enough because I know I probably will not make it to when the Pat’s a quality team again. I’m sure I won’t make it if Belichick returns as the GM and coach in 2024.

  186. So, maybe drafting is suspect. But drafting is a crap shoot for all teams, and not all top rated draftees pan out.
    No argument. That being said……
You are only as good as the people around you.
Its the brain drain. Its the people and lines coaches, that can get more than average, out of an average player. They have lost too much of that side of the ball. Its maybe not the entire reason, but i feel a big part. Its not only broken at the player drafting level, but the coaching levels as well. I still think Bill is a great coach. But as with players in one place too long, sometimes a change of scenery makes a difference. My issues is, with so much broken, as businessmen, do the krafts have the business and management skill talent, to be able to go out and get the “right” people to put in place, if they clean house? To me, thats the real question at this point, and not who they go after in the draft. Because any new group, will be responsible for that task of talent and draft evaluations and selections.
    First things first.
And yes, it will be painful. And yes, it will be a long process. And yes, I might not see it come to fruition as well.

  187. First of all, if the Patriots have a top 5 pick and pick an offensive lineman there will be a riot. They could get the next coming of John Hannah and no one will be happy. I do think the line is a big part of the problem but don’t want them to address it with their first round pick. I am very disappointed they didn’t trade off some players for draft picks at the deadline. Not sure if no one wanted anyone we have but I would like to see them make a trade or two just to signify the direction we were heading in.

Quarterbacks. I think its Mac Jones again. I would prefer a combination of Grier and Cunningham. I think we know what we got with Jones and Zappe. Lets see what these other guys can do. Give us a reason to watch these games. Does it matter, probably not we are probably looking for a QB in the offseason no matter what happens the rest of the season. Bill is annoying. Just say who the friggin QB is. I am assuming he knows. Jones and Zappe have been splitting first team reps from what I have heard. Perhaps he hasn’t flipped the coin yet to decide who gets the start. Do you think the Giants are putting in a different game plan for any of our QBs.

Unfortunately this is a very winnable game. These are the kind of games we need to dig down deep and find a way to secure a loss. Lets have the NFL looking at the game and launching an investigation into tanking. Lets replace the Sanches but fumble with something truly horrific. In my opinion, the only acceptable win left on the schedule is a win against the JETS and only if it keeps them out of the playoffs.

Cheapest seat for a Pats game on the secondary market is at 56 for this weeks Giants game in NJ. Much too high. We need to get that down under 30. We need some black friday savings. The last home game against the Jets is currently at 47. There is a real opportunity to get that down to 20 bucks a ticket. Do they still black out games in the local market if they don’t sell out. I wouldn’t mind having to watch an out of market game over the Pats these days. I am sure they already sold out all games this season. Perhaps next year.

I honestly think the Pats can turn it around in 2 to 3 years if they fully commit to a rebuild. They haven’t done that yet. They need someone new shopping for the groceries. The draft record is bad. You don’t really have the excuse that we get horrible draft spots because of all the winning. We aren’t winning. What scares me is the cap space. We are going to spend like drunken sailors on shore leave. Over pay for players who wont live up to the contract. And I think they have to do that to appease the angry fan base. Its going to set us back a few years on fully committing to a rebuild. If the Pats stink for the rest of my life. Its fine. We had a hell of a run.

    Happy Thanksgiving to all.

  188. Csg, im with you in all except one point.
    Cunningham is not a quarterback.
Yup. Conundrum. Listed as one, but he really is a receiver, and not a qb. Patriots have said as much. Had a trick play in training camp that everyone got excited about. Thats it.
Was put in in a game, for a trick play during the regular season, and not elevated since. For good reason.
After zappe and Cunningham were let go and resigned to practice squad, the pats went out and signed grier anyway. Why? Cause there is not a backup behind zappe, because cunningham is no qb, particularly on the nfl level.
I’d add jones and zappe as well, but thats really a different conversation.
And yes, happy thanksgiving raceday nation!
    Jmo only.

Neither player picked the Bears but SC wins it on total points.

That’s the second win in a row for SC and 3 for the 2023-24 season. Well done Mr. Courchesne you’re on a roll.

  201. First it was “is Mac Jones” broken. Then it was “is Bill Belichick” broken. Now it seems all the Patriots beat writers, radio commentators and podcasters are broken. From what I’ve heard they can’t do game analysis any more. They can’t even credit the defense that once again played more then good enough to win the baby getting thrown out with the bath water. Completely fixated on the the QB and Belichick situation they’re spending their entire time ranting about dysfunction on offense and for good reason. Pat’s have had something like 18 QB related roster transactions. That’s demonstrating to the entire team two bad things. First they don’t know what they’re doing. Second they have no respect for players sacrificing them like pawns on a chess board. Oh wait, 19 they may have just resigned Will Grier.

At this point the sports media is apoplectic that Belichick has refused to state who the QB is for games during the week they miss one thing. Belichick doesn’t know himself. The reason is Zappe is so bad he’s not even an NFL quality backup QB so the coaches are stuck like the movie Groundhog Day. The previous game never happened, they are practicing and hoping either QB shows he’s capable of leading the team.

If you watched the game on Sunday could you feel it? Zappe comes in and for a while you could feel the whole offense uplifted. Then he leads them to a touchdown and you’re thinking OK maybe now something has changed and the Pats can win this time. Then the interception, game ending with the missed field goal and what’s the reaction? Relief you don’t have to watch any more dysfunction the pain is over.

  206. Beat writers from Pats practice indicated that Bailey Zappe was getting the lion share of snaps with the first team. Cunningham was also getting some reps at QB. Jones was running the scout team during the portion of practice open to media. Pats resigned Will Grier back after releasing him late last week. Coach Belichick would not say who his starter was for this weeks matchup against the Chargers,

The Patriots brought in some kickers for a try out and signed Matthew Wright 4yr NFL veteran to the practice squad. CHad Ryland Pats current place kicker has struggled at times this season notably missing a game tying field goal last week against NYG. Ryland was a 4th round pick in the 2023 draft for the Patriots.

Pats tix are going for around 50 dollars on the secondary market for this weeks 1pm game against the Chargers. Not sure but I think that is probably less than face value.

A demanding task master his influence never so vivid as with his time with the Bucs. Everyone says Belichick is done with the Pat’s and he’s going to want to coach somewhere else. This off season is going to be something. Where’s Belichick go if he does go, who takes his place as coach, who’s the GM and what kind of staff will he put together. Oh yes and the big one. Who do they draft and is it a QB.
I’m still calling out the Dolphins as over rated. Their only win against a team with a winning record was the Broncos and they got them early in Miami before Denver turned things around big time. As soon as they play an away playoff game they lose.

  211. Chris Simms Picks says

Take on the pro. Chris Simms, son of NY Giants Super Bowl winning QB Phil Simms and an NFL QB at one time picks every week and these are his picks. You can copy him if you like but do it at your own risk. With a straight up success rate of 61% it’s not like these guys have all the secrets figured out.

Chris Simms….Colts, Falcons, Texans, Rams, Niners, Steelers, Lions, Bucs, Chiefs, Dolphins, Chargers to win and cover.

  212. Bobf;

    Colts
    Falcons
    Texans
    Rams
    Eagles

    Steelers
    Lions
    Buccaneers
    Chiefs
    Dolphins
    Patriots

  213. Far as pats go, I still say it was everyone together. No question Tom is the man. I dont think that makes Bill a terrible coach, as much as I am as sick of his tired responses as everyone else. The dynasty years saw great supporting cast in players, and more importantly, the behind the scenes day to day line coaches. Like racing, the perfect storm of all the top notch pieces. But alas, that was yesterday. The bigger question here is, how do you rebuild? In my opinion, if the clean house option is implemented, get ready for a lot more years of patriot pain. It takes time in the nfl to gel. But something needs to give, unless the krafts are really not that upset about current conditions. Sure, all the right things being alluded to. last year, the letter to season ticket holders alluded to this year being so much better.
I i even bought into the Patracia led offense being the problem, which would magically improve with O’Brian. And if Mac was ruined, certainly there would be things to be gained by playing Zappe under the O’brian system. While that is yet to play out, I’m not holding my breath.
Injuries. Well, thats The same hurdle for all nfl teams this time of year.
So all that aside, question is, where do pats and Krafts go from here? Are there enough resources? Do the Krafts have the moxie to pull a clean house trigger? Do they care enough ? Or is a half full house, 500 team silently the goal, for economics sense?
I think by the draft, good or bad for patriot nation, we should get a sense of what the real direction of this franchise, will be.

  214. I have questions as well.
-That’s three games that the defense played outstanding while the offense was MIA. Is there a lane for Belichick to remain coach for his defensive prowess on the condition he give up the GM job and cede complete control of the offense to Bill O’Brien?
-Is the Patriot offense so bad that we can view their scoreless effort yesterday as an improvement. Mainly because the fumble came on an injury and the QB had no interceptions or fumbles and moved in the pocket pretty well?

Charger/Pats game a push. In betting circles it’s considered a “no bet” but for our purposes we consider it a win no matter who you picked.

Once again Suitcase Jake the most successful player picking the winners and once again Fast Eddie nudges him out on the strength of underdog success.
That’s the third win for Fast Eddie in 2023!

    Thanks for playing!!

  216. Sorry Suitcase!! Along with the 3 wins I think I had two 2nd’s, one due to a tiebreaker. And I can definitely assure you, my picks would be vastly different if there was $$ on the line, making me far less successful at this!

  217. Pats tickets got down to 14 dollars for some choice 300 levels for yesterdays contest. That was 40 minutes before kick off. So now you can afford to take a family to an NFL football game. I asked a big time pats fan if he wanted to go. He said nah that’s too much to watch this team. I said you have never been to the new stadium. He said maybe if it was 75 and sunny. I said I really didn’t want to go to tell you the truth and half way through the conversation I was like why did I say that.

It is brutal watching this team. The defense should sue the offense for non support. I don’t remember much pre Bledsoe but this is bad. The entire game they are a one score away from taking the lead. I said the only way we get it is a td on defense. Can we just ground the ball on offense let the defense get back on the field. I am not even sure if our 4th round place kicker was replaced by the free agent signing late last week. The Pats never got the ball close enough to attempt a field goal. How bad is your offense that you never see your place kicker. The QB didn’t have any turnovers but he didn’t exactly move the ball down the field efficiently. I thought the offense was worse with Zappe than Jones. I still would like to see Grier or Cunningham over Jones or Zappe. I didn’t watch any of the post game as there was some good games on tv.

Carolina has nothing to play for but have been playing teams tough. Carolina has a 1 win season but traded their first round pick to Chicago. I am thinking they get a win or two before the end of the season. They don’t want the number one pick going to Chicago. The Cardinals got a W and now have 3 wins. I think the Pats have a real chance at securing that number 1 pick. I don’t know what the tie breaks are if the Pats tie another team for worst record.

I do see we play Pittsburgh on Thursday night football. Pitt just lost their QB last week. Can you say record ratings. Has there ever been a game finish 0 to 0 in the superbowl era. Old school football. I hope you like defense and punting.

  218. 🏈Pats Exception-Thursday Night One OFF 🏈 says

We don’t do Thursday night games obviously but if anyone cares to make an informal side bet for the Pats-Steelers game please weigh in.

Pats at Steelers (-6) Pick the winner and points

I’m taking the Pats and the points and for the total points a whopping 24. At some point simply by random happenstance they have to over perform and actually score enough points to win.

  219. Steelers, 34

  220. Ill play.
Steelers on another resigned quarterback out of the heap pile when pickett went down.
    No offense pats.
Ill go low, 17 and it goes pats way with the points.

  221. Suitcase Jake says

    STEELERS 20 PATSIES 10 = 30 TOTAL PTS

  222. csg PAts 2 steelers 0

  223. I found out what the tie break is to determine draft order should two teams be tied for a draft pick. It comes down to strength of schedule. the team with the lower strength of schedule gets the higher pick.

  224. ” At some point simply by random happenstance they have to over perform and actually score enough points to win.”

At the risk of tooting my own horn did I nail it or what? Steelers sleep walk through the first half while the Pats offense looks competent. Zappe tried mightily to give it all away throwing to Steelers a few times fortunate only one picked off. The Steelers defense wakes up but luckily Trubisky is no more competent then Zappe and a good Pats defense did the rest.
Forth and two and Trubisky throws a low percentage shot down the field that was well covered. What the heck was that?

  258. Christmas tradition, get to watch that last game with my football family here at the homestead after things settle out for the day. If its a good game, personally better than any super bowl for me because its christmas and party time with family. Happy holidays everybody!
My brother has been telling me for last month that ravens, and in particular jackson, will make it to champioship game at the very least.
Well boy, the niners had no answer for the ravens defense and containing jackson last night. And in the 4th quarter, you could tell that the coaches must have told Jackson to back off the gas a little bit, to lessen chance of injury.
While im not sure if the niners could have come back as they started rallying, it was getting interesting near the end none the less, till purdy went out with that “stinger” again. I wonder if that will be a nagging injury coming down to the finish line for him?
Enter Darnold, and he just could not keep that little bit of momentum going.
My biggest surprise of weekend, had to be the chiefs loss. Mahomes doesn’t seem to have that deep throw accuracy this year.
And is it me, or does kelce seem to have put on 15lbs and become a couple of steps slower this second half? Certainly doesn’t appear to be as “swift” as he was…
    Miami and ravens this weekend.
Hope the matchup lives up to the hype. Crunch time boys….

  259. I mean really, great game from the Pat’s at Mile High but does that do them any good? And my Lord the way it happened. Ryland the worst kicker in the league misses a prior field goal attempt and an extra point but hits the 56 yarder for the win. Yeah, I guess. A third of the team will be gone next year in free agency including a lot of the talent such as it is. The entire Belichick coaching infrastructure may be gone as well. When you think of it aside from pride Zappe is the only really big winner showing he can be an NFL level QB.

Our clan loved that Raiders-Chiefs game. Maybe it’s the past Pats-Chiefs rivalries or people saying Mahomes will be better then Brady but for some reason we love rooting against the Chiefs. Including doing the reverse tomahawk chop on Kansas City every time they managed to shoot themselves in the foot or throw a tantrum which was a lot. Kelce may be a “Swifty” now only in regard to his personal relationships but he sure can still catch the ball and is a load to bring down. The problem is there aren’t enough at his talent level on the Chiefs to throw to.

44 days until the NWMT opens at New Smyrna and about 12 days until we find out what the heck is going to happen with the coaching/GM situation with the Patriots. Sports talk is no help it’s anarchy out there. Whereas once the change was a lock now I’m hearing second thought rumors from Robert Kraft but no one really knows maybe not even the Kraft’s.

I’d ask Bobf as a dialed in Pat’s fan what in your opinion is your ideal for 2024 with regard to the coaching situation? What would you or anyone reading this would like to see happen. Then maybe guess what you think will happen.

  260. Doug;
    Complicated question.
Are the pats woes solely coaching related or is it talent related, or is it some of both?

But I guess your question to me was more about coaching, so I’ll take a stab.
I’d like to say, that first, this is not a brady vs bill debate from my perspective.
Brady best of all time for sure, but if he had stayed, there would not have been another ring for him. Why? Not talent around him.
Your comment of “there is not enough at his talent level around him to throw to” (Speaking of MaHomes) speaks volumes, and could have been just as easily said about tom, had he stayed. I always believed that and I think most others do too. Just stunk the way it ended, but good for Tom. So sorry about including the “Tom” topic here, but it seems you cant have any type of dialog these days, without that topic coming up.
So, it’s all the talent. Coaching, players, IMO.
    Need a complete package.

    What do I think happens?
Well, I think Bill stays. I think his body of work, and what he brought to the organization has endeared the Kraft family to him. Lets face it, he, and Tom, have made the Krafts a boatload of money. I think they are mindful of that. I hear all the time, Krafts are businessmen. Sure they are. But I also think they are in a way, indebted to Bill, and as such, they let Bill make the decision to walk or not. I think the job here is his, for as long as he wants it.
If Bill does go, it will be because Bill has an opportunity and its “his” decision, not the Krafts, whether thats true or not.
Remember, for all Bill’s crappy drafting, he was the one who selected Tom. He is also the one who selected Zappe, who is starting to look like a leader. Will he make it? Dunno, but right now Zappe is putting enough good runs together to solidify his position next year, while the pats slide further away from the 1 or 2 draft position. Conundrum.
Got a good defense this year. Hmm. Both Bills kids on the defensive side of the coaching ball. I hear a lot of criticism about that, nepotism et al; and yet the defense looks good. Hmmmm.
And then there is the crap shoot of the first round qb picks. Lets face it. The pats never thought a first round qb would be left at #15. So bill took it, and why blame him? Needed a qb really bad, and the opportunity was there. And to be honest, mac looked like he had potential year one with josh mcdanials. The gaffe was not having an offensive assistant coach that the reins could be handed to in the interim while a new coach search was on. I cant blame patricia, thrust into a crappy situation that wasnt his forte. But it possibly has ruined the confidence, if any is left, for one Mr Jones.
But yup, that was Bills call too.
So a lot to unpack. If you hate bill, his tired shtick, then you want to see him go.
Im not sure who would be right to replace him. I hear vrabel a lot. Im not sure about that, although he could be a fan favorite, as long as he wins.
I honestly would not mind if Bill stays, but the offensive line has to be top priority. Followed by legit wideout(s). And I dont care how much money they could have thrown at jacoby. He saw the handwriting on the wall, and was gonna follow josh no matter what. Pats never had a shot of keeping him.
Problem now is, I feel if Bill stays, no top tier player in their right mind, would want to come here, given current status of team at most all levels.
As for separation of coach from GM? I dont think Bill stays if the Pats say, “bill, we love ya and want you to stay, but we gotta bring in a GM”. I think that would make Bill walk.
So I think Bill stays, Krafts make all kinds of promises, and its more of the same.
But please Robert, we dont need the cap space to go towards another “lighthouse”.
We will know soon, but I for one would be very surprised if Bill is gone by spring. JMO.
Thanks for playing Doug! What do you think?

  261. Suitcase Jake says

Bring in Brian Flores … He turned the Miami Dolphins around quickly.. Got fired for Winning games near the end of the Season by a crooked Owner and filed suit against him & NFL .. Haven’t heard the status of the lawsuit but I am sure the League would like him to get another job as Head Coach and what better spot than New England where he Coached already.. He has done a great job in Minnesota keeping them in games with Kirk Cousins out for the season.. Brian Flores knows how to Coach & would be great to get a rebuild going & ramp it up quickly to a Winning Team..

  262. Love the Flores idea. Young, tough, head coaching experience, players respect him and he has a top 10 defense in Minnesota.
I agree with pretty much everything you said Bobf. I appreciate Belichick for what he’s meant to the Pat’s but he’s done plenty in the last four years to get fired. At 25 million per year or something like that you should be expected to produce results not live off of gratitude. Then there’s his demeanor that’s just disrespectful to team beat writers and in turn the fans. Also thinking Robert specifically is just not going to pull the trigger on a full reboot although I’d bet his son would do it in a second. Taking the GM roll away is a demotion and creating a disgruntled employee. Belichick could sabotage any acquisitions he didn’t like and he’s petty enough to do it.
The choices are either clean house with a complete reorganization starting with a new GM and coach with a new philosophy. If they go that route whether it’s Mayo or someone else I have full confidence the Krafts will do their homework and come up with a good plan. If that happens it will have to happen really fast as the top coaching talent gets snapped up. If it drags out that’s bad. It would likely mean they are re-arranging the deck chairs on the titanic with Kraft admitting he’s letting Belichick run the show as long as he wants. That would be delaying the inevitable and wasting yet another year while the rest of the NFL is moving at light speed.
    Thanks guys for weighing in.

  263. Suitcase;
Flores not even on my radar, forgot all about him.
    Doug, great comments as well.
But no matter how this plays out, there will be no quick fixes, so we all gotta be mindful that this, whatever “this” ends up being, and is just going to plain take a while.
I love football hot stove as much as racing hot stove.
    Happy new year to all.

  264. Suitcase Jake says

Happy New Year… Flores already knows the Defensive System so your 50% ahead right away…. He could bring in a Real Good Coaching Staff and hit the ground running.. He already did a reboot in Miami that the Yale genius looks really smart at this point , But Flores already laid the groundwork for a solid defense and young and FAST PLAYERS all over the field…. Young = Fast in this league you can’t get enough SPEED…. It makes sense on so many levels… so it probably won’t happen.. I will be glad to see billy head out to Nantucket or Giants or Washington …

🏈NFL Pick the Winner Week 18-No Pressure But……🏈

No pressure but 3 people are tied with 4 wins each this season and a forth could make it a 4 way tie with a win.
Weekly winners are based on points that include wins in bonus points games. With regard to simply picking games one player is well in command. For the second place player to overtake him the game differential would need to be 6 or more a scenario that is extremely unlikely.
3 players picked every game, 1 player missed one game and two missed three games.
As a group we were right 57% of the time. The most successful was right 62% of the time.

There will be a playoff contest based on Suitcase Jakes outline with point spreads in play. All playoff games will be picked through the Super Bowl. Maybe some sort of bonus to pick you gets there before the start or some other twist but mostly it will be one pot with the winner being who was most successful picking games.
Tie breaker being picking the Super Bowl winner once we know the teams and total points.
To win it appears we’ll have to have a rule that you must pick every playoff game.

  278. Love the stats doug.
On week 1 or week 2 of playoffs, might I suggest a 1 or 2 point bonus for the correct picking of the last 2 teams that make it in to super bowl?
This can be applied either to all, or just the players that make it to end, your discretion.
Or, we can leave it straight up. Just throwing it out there.

    🏈NFL Playoff Contest Proposal….Little Help Please?🏈

I’m confused about what is being suggested so I’m just throwing this out there. A little help please change anything you like but don’t give me a choice just tell me what to do.

    Basic Contest
There’s 13 playoff games total. My idea would be every player picks every game through the Super Bowl. Miss games and you’re basically out for the playoff championships but you can still play if you want.

Straight up or with the point spreads.
I can see going either way. Or some with the spread like maybe the first weekend then straight up you tell me.

    Bells and whistles
My idea………..before any games are played pick the four teams to play in the conference finals and the two teams you think with play in the Super Bowl.
    Points
5 bonus points if you nail the four teams in the conference finals.
4 bonus points if you get three of 4. Nothing for anything less then 3.
3 points if you nail the two Super Bowl teams
1 point for getting one of the two Super Bowl teams

I may have gotten carried away with the bonus deal.
Please change anything you like this is only a proposal.
    Thanks!

    1) The two Super Bowl contestants. Get both right you earn 2 points. One correct worth 1/2 bonus point.

    2) The Super Bowl winner. A correct pick earns you 1 point

  296. Doug;

So yeah, this response is late, as Bill is already gone.
The way I feel is mixed emotions on the issue. Very grateful for all the glory years and great teams that he coached. There are also a boatload of personnel that he impacted on the coaching side who have benefited and gone on to bigger and better things. I think that point is lost on a lot of sports fans.
But I do feel it was time. Change can be painful, but beneficial to those involved as well.
So I’m glad Pat’s did not wait, if this is the direction that they needed to go in.
Mayo seems well respected and talented, I wish him well. But he has never been a head coach, and is only 37. Thats ok, but you gotta make tough decisions in that job, and that part may be new to him. I think the Krafts were smart to go that way, as all the paperwork was in place, Romney rule avoided/satisfied, and they can hit the ground running right away.
Big thing now is Mayo’s staff. Who stays, who goes, who do pats go after for coaching sub roles. I think Bill’s kids may follow Bill wherever he ends up. If thats the case, bring back Flores to run defense if available. (And yes suitcase, I would not have minded seeing flores as head coach as well) Gotta have a talk with Trent Brown as well. While it could just be the talent at wide receiving, or the plays being called for the wide receivers, or lack if a quality qb throwing to receivers, the wide receivers room appears to be a mess. I gotta look at the coaching there as part of the big picture as well.
Elephant in the room now, is general managers role. Who? Hopefully, not Mayo. Too much to throw on a young guy on first go around imo.
Jonathan? Well, maybe first year I guess as the figurehead, till they see where things shake out. I do think its maybe time for Robert to take a step back though, if eventually, its all Jonathans sand box. But then again, you never know. If someone throws enough money at them for the empire, maybe they cash in………

  297. Much the same thinking as mine on almost every point and underscore the GM selection……….huge!
    Good comment, thanks.

  298. With this stinker the Dallas Cowboys are putting up. I think Bill Belichick ends up there. I was leaning towards Atlanta before today. I was hoping for Mike Vrabel once he was let go from TN but from what I have heard everyone really likes Mayo and he was already promised the job contractually. I would be shocked if the Belichick kids stay. I wouldn’t mind them bringing back flores on the defense and even Josh McDaniels as a qb coach or offensive coach if Bill Obrien leaves. He made Mac Jones a respectable QB in his rookie season. Apparently, it was all smoke and mirrors. Imagine what he could do with a good QB. You are right we have to start getting these picks right. The GM is most important part. What did you think of the KC game being broadcast on Peacock exclusively? I have heard they are getting a lot of crap about the decision on the old internets, can we get a good game. Really hoping this Det v Stafford game is close. The NFL can use one good game this weekend.

  299. You wanted a close game in Detroit and boy did you get it.
So Peacock is making a big deal about streaming the game saying it was a first and sign up to be part of the ground breaking event. Another game going to a pay service which was expected but to say it was a big deal when we got it for free before was particularly annoying. So what did I do, signed up. Frigid conditions. wanted to see Miami fold and wasn’t disappointed on both scores. So they got me. Just for a month but they got me.
Also folding the Cowboys which was kind of a shocker. The young Packers and the Detroit offensive line reminded we Pats fan what football should look like. Hard to imagine a QB getting time to go through his progressions, wait for receivers to get open but it is possible apparently.
What will crafty old Bill do? Cowboys seem like a perfect fit to get the record the fastest if he can get along with Jerry Jones. Vrabel might be a better longer term option for Dallas.
Sorry boys looks like no new GM for the Pat’s. Phil Perry reports that they’ll go with Groh and Wolf. If that’s the case we will have to hope they weren’t the ones doing the picking over the last few years. If Belichick was green lighting their picks we’re screwed.

  300. Suitcase Jake says

Dallas does not need a new Coach, They need a QB who doesn’t throw away the game in 2 possessions, Deer in headlights every time playoffs start every year , now 2 – 5 in playoffs…They just panicked too soon , should have run the ball and mixed in passes to get back in it, but as we saw again… Panic and throw it all over the yard & bang bang two picks and down 27 – 0 before they knew what happened…Same Old Cowboys.. Thanks for playing!

  302. I’ve thought that for a while now suitcase, same-same. Even in the Romo days, if they had a shot, for some reason Dallas qbs seem to throw up the meatballs. Dont know what it is about Dallas. But they were soundly outplayed on both sides of the ball this weekend imo.
Was there a bigger collapse of a team this season than the mid season 10-1 Eagles? So all teams are beat up to a degree come playoff time with key injuries. But they skidded hugely the second half of season. They got some things to figure out headed to off season.
Rams Lions. Enough said there. Great game, but I do feel overall, that when referees let teams play in playoff games, the refs get inconsistent. Players push the envelopes and things normally called during season do not get called or let go depending on severity of infraction playoff time, it seems. I thought Lions got a way with a few. Jmo
I could not buy into getting Peacock for one game. To me, that just enables the NFL to do that more and more. May not be able to stop it anyway, but it certainly will not stop if they consistently get the numbers Peacock said they did. Buying public has the power. But I know my one abstention wont matter. Look at cup. 4 races this year on Prime. Yeah, I remember Helton saying back in the 90’s, that cup would always be on national, not “pay for” tv. Oh well. Enough of that, people have the right to do what they want (lawfully anyways) for whatever reason they feel they need to.
I’m looking at this weekend and figuring the toughest game for me to figure, may be the Cheifs-Bills. And boy, if Allen is healthy as he has been of late, he’ll just take matters into his own hands. Hard guy to stop.
Will there be any rust coming back from byes for niners and ravens? Nah. Probably not…

  303. I swear I didn’t intend to pick up Peacock for a month I never do that. I blame it on beer and how much I wanted to see Miami look so miserable in the cold.
I’ll admit also I’m all in on the Bills. You live up in Buffalo and put up with what they have to if the Pats aren’t in it it’s go Bills. Probably because of Josh Allen. That guy better stop taking on linebackers and safeties or he’s going to have a short career. The one time he did slide a Steeler was so shocked he gave him a shot anyway and drew a flag.
It’s all about OC, DC and position coaches for the Pats now. What will Mayo do?

Mayo should help player Moral , Can you imagine walking down a hallway in Foxboro, being a player , crossing paths with MR EGO BILL and have BILL just walk on by without saying hey or hello or how are you ??? INHUMAN things were going on with that Team , .. Just a Honest FRESH VOICE with HUMILITY will go a TREMENDOUS LENGTHS for the PATRIOTS PLAYERS, COACHES, AND OFFICE PERSONAL and should pay dividends right away on the field and off … Draft a QB with the first pick and let there be a TRUE COMPETITION for the Starters job and they should get the rebuild going on solid ground… With Rodgers starting for the JETS along with BUFFALO & MIAMI with STRONG TEAMS it will be awhile before Pats sniff the AFC EAST TITLE … There is going to be some more suffering for loyal Pats Fans in next 3 or more Seasons I am afraid.. If they LAND THE RIGHT QB it could turn faster like in Houston, but They were in a horrible Division and Patriots arguably are NOW IN ONE OF THE STRONGEST DIVISIONS in the NFL . All 3 of those teams have Strong QB’s and Defenses to boot.. ONLY SCARE with BILLS is JOSH ALLEN LEADS THE LEAGUE IN TURNOVERS , Along with running the ball like a MAN among BOYS .. INJURY is always a POSSIBILITY .. you saw the HIT ON HIGBEE .. RIGHT ON THE KNEE.. THAT low HIT SHOULD BE TAKEN OUT OF THE GAME.. THE SMALLER DB’S HAVE TO TAKE OUT THE BIGGER TIGHT ENDS AND THEY AIM LOW … SHOULD BE THIGH TO SHOULDERS .. DETROIT HAS AN EXCELLENT COACH WHO PLAYS TO WIN.. BUT THEY DON’T QUITE HAVE ALL THE PIECES IN PLACE ON DEFENSE YET… Baltimore & San Francisco have the best teams and Coaches to get to the Super Bowl in my humble opinion…
Good Luck with the Picks… The Home Teams have an ADVANTAGE but is it ENOUGH to cover the points spread they are handing the visiting TEAMS..??? well that’s why they PLAY THE GAME… WE will SEE…

  309. Doug…Ravens, Packers, Lions, Bills

  310. Bill O’brian gone.

What stinks above, is you know some team aint gonna cover! Csg in catbird seat imo!

  311. Bill OBrien says I get no respect here in New England and does the triple Lindy back to school at Ohio State. I am fine with it. The offense was crap. It was worse than the year before somehow. I don’t think it was his fault, but he couldn’t scheme up anything to overcome the lack of player talent. Honestly, I don’t think anyone could have done much with the talent assembled. I wouldn’t mind seeing Josh Mcdaniels as he made rookie Mac Jones look like a serviceable qb, He was even am injury replacement pro bowler his rookie year.

Mac is under the last year of his cheap rookie contract so I think he will remain on the roster unless they can trade him which would result in absolutely nothing in return at present value. If they do take a rookie qb, they may not want to subject him to the leaky o line and start someone else initially. No need to damage your shiny new QB. If they do go with a new OC it would be Mac Jones 4th year and 4th OC. You are certainly not making it easy on him.

Unfortunately, I think Mayo might want to go in a different direction than Josh McDaniels at OC. Josh was kind of the heir apparent before leaving for Las Vegas. If the Pats don’t get off to a good start which is more likely than not, People may get down on Mayo quickly. While Josh head coaching runs were downright awful in Las Vegas and Denver, he is a former head coach with experience readily available for fans to clamor for.

Bill Belichick had a second interview with Atlanta today. I haven’t seen anything indicating the job was offered yet. My guess is it will be. I think once Bill Belichick is hired we will see his offspring head out the door. Its probably a pretty good spot even though they probably need a qb which was his biggest issue in NE after Brady left. Monday is the first day you can interview coaches that made the playoffs. We will probably get some more clarity on coaching vacancies on Monday.

I will say the Mayo introduction did worry me a little bit. They didn’t really have much in the way of answers to questions. Just a bunch of evaluating. He has been there, there shouldn’t be much evaluating left tp do, that’s the benefit of hiring internally. I am not sure waiting for after the draft to pick a GM is the right course of action. Who do we blame if the pick stinks. Who is making the pick? Aren’t there a bunch of decisions to be made before the draft. If we are looking outside wouldn’t most of the best candidates be employed already. My guess. they have someone internally and will just announce it sometime after the draft to shelter the new guy from scrutiny over the most important Pats draft selection over the last 20 years. I do like the use of titles in the new regime. I think that’s important to know who is doing what over there.

Anyway, really looking forward to Bills Chiefs game. Ideally, I would love to see Detroit v Buffalo Superbowl. That way one storied franchise that hasn’t won a Superbowl will. Houston also hasn’t won a Superbowl, but they haven’t been around as long. Even the TN Titans formerly Houston Oilers haven’t won a Superbowl. I would be happy with any of the three winning. A rookie QB has never won a superbowl. Brady was year 2.

  312. My Lord, the Bills stadium workers along with dozens of snow shoveler’s are digging out Highmark Stadium for the second week in a row after more feet of snow. If the Bills and Texans win they may have to do it a third time. A record I’m sure no one can come close to or even wants to for that matter. Should be OK for game time but the Bills have struggled to get to practice all week and are playing with two less days of rest then the Chiefs.
Here’s an interesting tid-bit. Aside from Super Bowl neutral field appearances this is the first time Mahomes is playing a playoff game on a field other then Arrowhead Stadium.
Good mix in our picks this week. If past is prologue there will be an upset or upsets no one could have predicted and one of us could end up doing very well.

  313. Just want to second csg’s 5th paragraph that was exactly my reaction.
We’ll see if the parts fall into place. For now it seems like Mayo is an island all these questions are circling around above and below him. No judgment at this stage but we really hope to see a clear chain of command emerging in the following weeks. Complete with the assignment of authority and responsibility as we move quickly toward decisions on the Pats free agents and others the team may be interested in.

  314. Nice piece as well csg. I agree on all points.
But, even with our concerns, Mayo is the guy now, and I know that I gotta give him a chance first.
Like suitcase said, it will take years.
There are just too many needs.
And what happens if the guy you want isn’t in the top 3 in the draft?
If you can get caleb Williams or Jayden Daniels, well ok. From what I’m reading though, I’m not all in on Drake Maye (yet anyways).
If I cant get who I really want as a team (and hopefully the patriots organization knows who is gonna pan, but it is the draft and never know), then I really want a shored up O line, legit wideout threat, another corner.
Hire a veteran qb to help the team and zappe get through next year.
Maybe a Joe Flacco or Flacco type.
How about Browning? He wont have a role if Burrow comes back. Or maybe Burrow himself!
Yeah, those guys under contract, but….
Either way, what player is going to be clamoring to come to new England given its current team status? Tough sell….
Yeah Doug, free tickets and all the free beer in the world could not get me to Highland stadium, with all the charged up yahoos chucking snow up in the air going all over everybody huddled up to keep warm. Yuck. Jmo.

Our contest is coming down nicely to the 49’ers and Raven loyalists. Suitcase Jake and csg need San Francisco to win, Bobf and Fast Eddie the Ravens. Either one loses and the Super Bowl round will come down to two players. The 49’ers and Ravens win 4 players with still be in it with total points in the Super Bowl game probably deciding the winner.

  323. Suitcase Jake says

Suitcase- Ravens-3.5 Lions + 7 .. Oh how the mighty bill has lost value…
82- 98 record without Brady is that good ?? LOL enjoy Nantucket….

  324. I just read an article saying that Arthur ATL owner wanted Coach Bill but didn’t want to give him all the power and authority he was looking for. There was also a preexisting issue between Bill and the GM there where they butted heads on some league issues in the past. So, they went in a different direction.

honestly. I think the guy can coach. I would have liked to have seen him get the record. There isn’t much out there. It doesn’t look good for Vrabel either. Not sure where he lands at this point. You think they head to college?

Thinking Bill and Tom Brady on a Fox broadcast would be interesting. Tom. Remember when you said I was washed up. You know they do the super bowl parade on boats in Tampa. which is really nice. Bill. on to the second half Tom. We got a barn burner here. Pats are winning by 20 like its mid dynasty. fade out to Glory days by Bruce Springsteen

  325. I’ll admit it. I was one of the people that thought Belichick and Kraft letting Brady get away with not much of a fight was the right decision and that Belichick could find a way to continue to be moderately successful. The Cam Newton decision should have been a clue but still felt the Pats would be fine. Well that didn’t happen did it?
I still maintain that two decade run of success was some kind of symbiotic deal involving Belichick and Brady. Neither would have had the same success without the other. I also think it’s possible to be grateful to Belichick for what he contributed to the epic run while also being mad as heck at him for leaving the team a shell of what it was and an offense that has virtually nothing to build on.
If NFL teams don’t want a 72 year old coach that wants total control of their organization with a recent history of losing and a snarky, arrogant demeanor in dealing with the media covering their team I can see why they’d come to that conclusion.

ALERT: Changing my pick to Chiefs and the 49’ers.

  326. My take was always this.
Bill and Tom were like the Beatles Lennon and McCartny
Together, the Beatles were great, as were the Patriots. Apart, individuals very talented in their own right, but just not the same dynamic.
I’ll be taken to task because yes, Tom wins a superbowl going “solo”, and like McCartny sparse #1’s here and there. Which of the two had more talent can be argued forever, when it came to their individual disciplines? That will be argued to the end of time depending on the camp you are in. I just think that together, they pushed each other to be better, for what ever the reason was. Love, not so much love, egos, or somewhere in between. Just an opinion.

  327. Suitcase Jake says

Great Analogies… The Beatles had unrivaled success… from Unknown Liverpool England, the coastal town gateway to the sea where the river Mersey meets the Irish Sea….Tom Brady on the bench mostly at Michigan until the starter Drew Henson left on a Yankee’s Baseball Contract , that got Brady off the bench to Start, Or we might not have ever known the GOAT Tom BRADY …THEY ALL GOT FAME… SOME STAYED HUMBLE.. SOME HAD EGO’S BIGGER THAN LIFE… They all eventually BROKE UP… Some continued their OWN SUCCESS ,,, some returned to being humbled as an individuals… Bill is a great Defensive and overall rules guru who knows the game from humble beginnings, learning under His dad who was with Navy…All the way up to Coaching LT and working with Bill Parcells…He wants total control cuz his EGO can’t work with other opinion’s and that will be His downfall…Tom will continue to succeed in whatever he touches…The QUIET BEATLE George Harrison was my favorite and most talented in my opinion….He was visited by ALL THE REMAINING BEATLES 17 days before Cancer from cigarettes took him way too EARLY at 58 yrs old. His final words were ” Everything else can wait , but the search for God cannot wait , and love one another” Truly a humble man, did not let EGO get in the way…

  328. Gonna rate that comment by Suitcase Jake as one of the expansive, interesting posts I’ve ever read in this forum. In a class by it’s own.

It’s half time in the Niners-Lions game and Detroit is doing very well. I don’t know who will win but I did change my pick from the Lions to the Niner’s and am thinking never change your pick.

  330. SC and Doug, thanks for the work and fun on this.
So much for the cant miss Ravens.
I thought it was a stupid call Dan Campbell made to go for it 4th and 2, while that far ahead. When Niners stopped that, it sucked all the wind out of Lions, and shifted momentum to Niners. Overconfident, unnecessary stupid play, that I think, cost the Lions the game. Lions never recovered the cohesive magic after that, and handed all momentum to niners.

  331. Suitcase Jake says

Thanks Doug for the kind words, It’s fun to pontificate sports to real world events. Bobf, I agree 100 % , Turned to the Bride at that point and said they should take the easy 3 points not give the niner’s and fans any hope or something to cheer for , Up till that point the FAITHFUL were not happy and sitting on theirs hands, That 4th down stop turned the momentum , where the better choice would be the 3 pts and add to the lead & along with making the Mountain a little higher to climb……BUT DAN Campbell is one of a kind Coach who you have to admire for His Aggressive play calling, He did this sort of thing all year & probably wouldn’t have gotten the Team this far without it…The offense was highly rated but their defense was in the 20’s in the rankings so he really tried to keep the offense on the field as much as possible to protect his defense….That Patrick Mahomes is MONEY along with the surrounding cast, Andy Reid is an Amazing Coach and play caller. I really didn’t think they could beat the Ravens with that great Defense in Baltimore. My Super Bowl Pick was Niner’s but with the way the Chief’s are playing I am really questioning what team they are, the first half team or the second half team …????????

  332. Fast Eddie says

I’ll second you Bob, thanks to Shawn and Doug to have this available, definitely a fun thing to do! Bob and Suitcase, love the Beatles analogies, spot on!!
This football weekend was a tail of, “Two teams showed up for the whole game, and two showed up for only 1/2 the game”. Baltimore playing zone for the whole first 1/2 it seemed, no one near Kelce the whole half. If Detroit took a shot at the two field goal opportunities they had instead of “going for it” on 4th down, the game could have been very different. If they missed, nothing changed, but if they made them, it would have been a tie game and potentially worse field position for SF’s next possessions.
