In some parts of Connecticut snow covered ground still remains on April 8.

Winter’s grip won’t seem to let go.

But this weekend Thompson Speedway officials will tell Mother Nature to give it up and let spring begin with the running of the Icebreaker 2015.

The weekend event is highlighted by the season opener for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour.

Saturday: Practice and qualifying for all divisions. Features: 20-lap Mr. Rooter New England Truck Series, 20-lap Limited Sportsman, 20-lap NEMA Lite, 15-lap Mini Stock and SK Light Modified, 9:45 am

Sunday: Features: 150-lap NASCAR Modified Tour, 40-lap Granite State Pro Stock Series, 75-lap NASCAR All-American Series SK Modified, 25-lap Late Model, 20-lap Limited Sportsman and 15-lap Mini Stock, noon.

Bonsignore won two of three Whelen Modified Tour events at Thompson in 2014. Ryan Preece won the Whelen Modified Tour season finale at Thompson last October. … Doug Coby begins defense of 2014 Whelen Modified Tour championship. Coby, the 2012 series champion, is looking for his third title in four years.
