Fluid Schedule: Lee USA Speedway Added To 2022 Whelen Modified Tour Slate

Call it version 1.4 for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour 2022 slate.

The ever evolving 2022 Whelen Modified Tour schedule got another addition Tuesday morning.

JDV Productions announced a Whelen Modified Tour event will take place at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, N.H. on May 21 next season.

“The Wrenn family has made a significant contribution to short track racing — first as competitors, and now as facility owners,” JDV Productions owner Josh Vanada said in a release. “We are grateful for the opportunity to bring the prestige and excitement of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour to another one of their venues. For the first time in over 20 years, Lee USA Speedway will be the playground for NASCAR’s oldest division. The 175-lap event will provide a challenge to crew chiefs and teams, as they try to manage their tires on the abrasive track surface. Race fans are sure to be the beneficiaries on May 21, 2022.”

JDV Productions will also promote events in 2022 at Monadnock Speedway in Winchester, N.H. and Claremont (N.H.) Speedway. Former racer Norm Wrenn owns Monadnock and co-owns Claremont. JDV Productions will also promote a 2022 event at Jennerstown (Pa.) Speedway.

It marks the fourth significant update to the Whelen Modified Tour schedule since the bulk of the slate was announced on Nov. 3.

The Lee event in 2022 will be 175 laps. It will mark the first Whelen Modified Tour event at Lee USA Speedway since 1998.

The Whelen Modified Tour has run five times in its history at Lee USA Speedway with Ed Flemke Jr. winning in the last event at the track in 1998. The series also ran at the track once annually from 1993 to 1996.

A post on Twitter Tuesday morning from NASCAR announced that the Whelen Modified Tour schedule is now “complete”. The full schedule includes 16 events for 2022.

New Hampshire matches New York as the most visited state on the 2022 Whelen Modified Tour schedule, with four events at four tracks in the Granite State. The series will also visit Monadnock (June 18), New Hampshire Motor Speedway (July 17) and Claremont (July 29). The series will visit Riverhead (N.Y) Raceway three times in 2022 and also run at Oswego (N.Y.) Speedway. The series will also make three stops in Virginia, two stops in Connecticut and single event stops in Florida, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The bulk of the 2022 Whelen Modified Tour schedule was announced by NASCAR on Nov. 3. A 16-race schedule was announced Nov. 3, which included three “To be announced” events for July 30, Aug. 6 and Sept. 24.

On Nov. 9 it was announced that an event at Claremont Speedway would be added on July 29 next season.

On Nov. 12 it was announced that a second Whelen Modified Tour event would be run in 2022 at Thompson Speedway as part of the Sunoco World Series.

On November 23 it was announced that the originally announced April 23 event at Langley Speedway would be moved to Aug. 27.

Last week, after the announcement of the Langley date move, NASCAR management told team owners and competitors to expect one more TBA event to be filled. The TBA slots were removed from NASCAR’s online schedule on Tuesday morning.

  1. Wow! I never thought THAT would happen! Finally have a reason to go to Lee besides Oktoberfest! Wonder how many tires they will get?

  2. The place will be PACKED !! Great place to see a Race. Sight lines are perfect, pit road is mostly visible from Main grandstands , Backstretch sight lines are just right also with the pits lower down in the infield area , Yes the track is abrasive but its something that everyone will have to use strategy on pit stops and fuel being 175 laps…… Jon McKennedy will be an early Favorite with multiple Wins at Lee……Not sure if the Purse will be BIG enough to have BIG MONEY MATT make the trip …??? It’s a 1/3 mile with good banking, Turns 1& 2 is more sharper turn ..with higher banking .. Turns 3 & 4 are more wider sweeping turn like almost egg shaped after it was converted from the TRI-OVAL years ago , Changed to it’s current shape… Great place to drive & FAST 1/3 mile ….Should be SOLD OUT with cars parked out on the road like it was years ago.. Can’t wait for this Race … Driver Skill will be on a Premium at Lee when tires wear down , Crew Chiefs will be Alert on lap times and tire falloff , Lot’s of Strategy for sure….
    .

  3. Nice of Nascar to not schedule this on Lee’s traditional Friday night. I’m guessing thanks to JDV & the Wrenn organizations for that. It will be interesting to see how the car counts are for this and the first Stafford Friday Open event the night before.

  4. Well, it looks like Sizzler weekend is safe now. Will it be 40+ entries? 50+ entries?
Enough entries to maybe have a non qualifiers race….. can’t get here soon enough

  6. Great list Doug! One suggestion? Add the SK 5K on 8/5 to your list. I know it’s not a “tour-type” race, but in recent years that has been the biggest SK Mod race in the Northeast, if not anywhere. I think it deserves at least an “honorable mention” spot on your list.

  7. Roger that. It will be included in the next update.

  8. And add the Whitcomb 5 schedule to that compilation.

  9. Nice work Doug. Thanks for putting that together for us. Its going in my phone.

  10. Thanks Doug. I’d add Thompson Outlaw Mod schedule though too.

  11. Thanks Jussayin. It’s a work in progress. Over time I’ll pack as much information in as possible for all we modified fans to see how all the pieces fit into the overall modified landscape for 2022.

  12. Now that the schedule for all intents and purposes is final for the NWMT as well as most of the other biggest series the question remains on what the streaming landscape will look like in 2022.
Stafford is set with FloRacing for it’s sophomore year and if the trend continues will be better then ever. The cost at $150 will probably change at some point but really is anyone complaining. No seriously in a place built on complaints did one person complain about the cost to get all the Stafford races last year via FloRacing?
Speed51 is now Racing America powered by Speed51TV so we’ll have to see what changes will be happening there. Each Tri Track facility calls their own shots on streaming races and they all were on Speed51 except one event and that may have been more about staffing shortages. If they stick to the script we won’t know about their streaming plans until we’re deep into the season.
The new NHSTRA Whitcomb 5 series has already referred to streaming coverage in their press release but who. We’ll see if it lands with Racing America but just mentioning TV coverage this early is big.
The elephant in the room is clearly the NWMT. NBC Sports Gold ending in 2021 so what are the plans if any for 2022? We’re kind of spoiled now starting with New Smyrna and the idea that the new week of racing including the NWMT opener not offered would be a major setback.
I’m thinking that will not be an issue. Not a whole lot being said on the topic but in a Nascar November 1 press release this appeared at the end of the article specifically about the modifieds.

“The remainder of the 2022 schedule will follow at a later date, as will race times and broadcast information for all races.”

No the cost will not likely be a ridiculous few bucks every month like last year but whatever it is it will be worth it if it can be chosen as an ala carte option. If they make it a part of a big satellite, cable or streaming package via Peacock or USA that’s gonna be a problem for some of us.
Perhaps Comrade Creepy and his legion of doom at the Speedbowl with their last century iron curtain ideas of controlling media coverage will be considering streaming events for 2022.
Thunder Road is back on FloRacing. Oswego new plus the dizzying array of dirt racing they provide.
Riverhead back on SpeedSport. Seekonk offers content on YouTube but has not offered subscription viewing of their races up to now. Hopefully that will change in 2022.

  13. Thanks for the consolidated schedule, Doug.

Has Stafford settled on 100 laps as the standard SK 5K race distance?

  14. “SK Modified® – T-B-A laps”

That’s all the schedule says. However it has always been 100 laps except perhaps the first year so why they just don’t print 100 laps one can only guess.

  15. Stream Analyst says

I perceive the Speed51 rebranding as Racing America is just a cover for their less than stellar reputation in the streaming world. Flo Racing delivers at least 100 races each as part of their one-time yearly subscription that Speed51 would charge a premium event surcharge for. One has to ask oneself how does Flo deliver so much more for less?

  16. Excellent Work Doug, Wow the MODIFIEDS have a SMORGASBORD of Races for US to pick and choose from ….. I guess nascars OLDEST DIVISION is ALIVE and WELL..!!!! I cannot remember so many races to choose from in the last 20 Years … Maybe 30 years ago with the weekly shows up and down the east coast along with the YANKEE all stars the EASTERN BANDITS used to chase ..?? I know Bugsy , Richie, Gerry, Eddie used to race in 60 to 80 events in one year .. These races are starting to ADD up to quite a few races… in 2022… Mods are alive and well….

  17. i love the consolidated schedule efforts by Doug!
for years now, i write down all touring type modified races on my calendar. in addition to what Doug has put here (though i wouldnt include the Whicomb 5) i include the Southern Modified Series, the RoC series, the special events at Riverhead (Charlie J/Baldwin/Richie memorial), and various other open comp races. some examples are the Mahoning Valley special events, the Turkey derby, and a handful of special events at Bowman Gray (Hayes 200 and the fans challenge races).
one realizes there is alot of races available for us fans to go see and that there alot of touring type cars out there!
Good Lord willing, i’ll get to 25 touring type modified races in 2022!!
    hope everyone enjoys their holidays!

  18. Regarding the streaming:

IMSA has already announced the move to peacock, which was the other main series of trackpass. All the other gold entities (IndyCar, super cross etc.) have also already moved over to peacock. If I’m a betting man, I would bet on the NASCAR roots stuff moving over as well. It’s not much of a price hike, either.

“One has to ask oneself how does Flo deliver so much more for less?”

From what some dirt vision people have said when discussing their ($300) price point vs Flo’s, they make it seem like dirtvision has to run in the black while Flo is kinda taking the loss-leader approach due to 50 million or so investment flosports as a whole has raised. will be interesting to see what their the price point of a sub is in 2 or 3 years time.

the rebranding of speed51 into racing America coincided with the launch of their new wider reach since the nascar RTA purchased it. will be interesting to see if they step their game up as they are pretty uncompetitive.

  19. “IMSA has already announced the move to peacock, which was the other main series of trackpass. All the other gold entities (IndyCar, super cross etc.) have also already moved over to peacock. Xfinity subscribers get Peacock for free! https://www.peacocktv.com/xfinity

  20. “Xfinity subscribers get Peacock for free! ”

“Peacock Premium is included for no additional cost for all Xfinity Flex customers and Xfinity X1 and video customers who have a subscription to Xfinity Internet or Digital Starter TV, or equivalent, or above. Peacock Premium has a $4.99/month value.”

No additional cost is not free.

  21. Great times suitcase.
Mentioned before, I think this just could be, a future golden era, when looked back on.
And, MRS has not scheduled yet to my knowledge.
I’m happy for streaming, as I hope This new virus varient doesn’t screw things up. But i think there is a jump on it at least. Fingers crossed.

  22. ” i include the Southern Modified Series, the RoC series, the special events at Riverhead (Charlie J/Baldwin/Richie memorial), and various other open comp races. some examples are the Mahoning Valley special events, the Turkey derby, and a handful of special events at Bowman Gray (Hayes 200 and the fans challenge races).”

Those are all good ideas. My criteria primarily is the races that this forum tends to have the most knowledge of and interest in. More importantly races we all have access to either in person or via streaming that post race we can share thoughts on.
The Smart tour is coming because it has been added to FloRacing. Other races as well like the Turkey Derby and Islip 300 2022 not scheduled yet.
Anyone is free to copy and paste and add whatever events they like. I’ll continue to try to make it more about the teams and drivers we know the best and events we have the most access to.

  23. NH Mod Fan says

Doug, thanks for putting the modified series schedules in one place. You’ve done all the winter sorting for me. Much appreciated! Just 70 more days……

  24. You think the consolidated schedule is good how about the tour mod listing I’m working on.
How many teams are out there anyway? I have no idea but I’m going to take a run at getting a fairly good idea.

  26. To be fair I did say it was just the start but I like your spirit and will do your list next.

  27. Eddie Driscoll says

A few more for the list mostly from from TTOMS and Open events: 22 Buddy Charette, 25NH Brian Robie, 27 Derek Robie 25 Calvin Carroll, 50K Matt Kimball, 6 Ben Byrne, 81X ??, 20 Tony Ricci, 55 Ryan Doucette, 13 Dylan Izzo, 55B Robert Bloxam, 2 Frank L’Etoile Jr, 50 Ronnie Williams, 21 Angelo Belsito, 0 Devin O’Connell, 76CT Dana DiMatteo, 8CT Cam McDermott, 07 Kyle James, 3CT Matt Galko, 81 Josh Cantara, 27 Kevin Ianarelli.

  28. Hey Doug ….. by no means was I trying to diss your list, just trying to help.
A few more I thought of
    2 and 21 Gershow
    15 Johnson
    45 Catalano
    1 Wannick ?

  29. Eddie Driscoll,
I don’t think the 25 Calvin Carroll is involved in racing any longer.

  30. Thanks Shawn! Oh well 20 out of 21 isn’t bad! 🙂

  31. If you’re going to take the time to mention names I’m more then happy to do them first. Tell you one thing there are a crap ton of teams so buckle up this is gonna take a while.
If you know the teams chassis and engine preferences or where their shop is located all the better. Listings usually give the drivers home town so that is not a priority on my list.
My priority is owners mainly because they don’t get the recognition they deserve in my view. I’m most interested in giving the owners home town or shop location and that can be a lot harder to pin down.

  32. Fast Eddie says

Doug, great point about the owners. The driver gets most of the recognition, but it’s the owners’ time, $$, and expertise both personally and personnel-wise that got the driver there.
