Ron Silk of Norwalk, CT, drove to his first-ever Race of Champions Modified Series victory this past Friday night at Spencer Speedway in Williamson, NY, and it was in one of the most lucrative victories in the history of the Speedway, with over $54,000 in purse money for the Modified event. Silk took home $11,000 for his efforts in what is considered the best per lap for Modified racing in the region.

Silk started 5th and slipped past Jake Lutz of Hamburg, NY, on a restart when Lutz missed a shift. From that point Lutz pressured Silk all the way to the checkered flag, however, it was to no avail as Silk narrowly earned the victory.

“We had a great car and I need to thank my team for that,” stated Silk in victory lane. “It’s awesome that we won our first Race of Champions race in the Maynard Troyer Classic, he was certainly a legend of this sport. Jake (Lutz) is young and he’s extremely good. I hope he doesn’t get too much better, he really gave us a run for our money.”

Lutz came home 2nd. Current Series championship point-leader, Zane Zeiner of Bath, PA, posted yet another top-five finishing 3rd. Paulie Hartwig, III of Galloway, NJ, finished 4th and Jack Ely formerly of Wall, NJ, now residing in Northampton, PA, finished 5th.

Silk earned the fastest time in green-white-checker qualifying. Silk, Zeiner, Mike Leaty of Williamson, NY, and Hartwig earned the qualifying race victories.

Kevin Timmerman of Ontario, NY, redrew the pole and led flag-to-flag to win the Race of Champions Sportsman Modified Series feature this past Friday. Timmerman topped Eddie Hawkins of Marion, NY, and Mike Leaty. Timmy Lewis of Ontario, NY, and Andy Jankowiak of Tonawanda, NY, rounded out the top-five.

Jake Christman of Walnutport, PA, posted the fastest time in the final practice session to earn the bonus points. Christman, Evan Rygielski of Wilkes-Barre, PA, and Andrew Lewis, Jr., of Ontario, NY won the qualifying races.

Joey VanLane of Williamson, NY won the Race of Champions Rocket Performance 602 Sportsman Modified Series race. VanLane outran Jenna Dietz of Holland, NY, and John Sippel of Webster, NY.

Dietz won the qualifying race

  1. “I really want to thank the engine builder. This engine is untouchable and most teams can’t afford it so it feels good to have the only 80,000.00 engine in the field. Until these open modified series engine rules change to help the other teams I’m going to keep collecting purse money. I’m going to run 4th now on the tour where the engines are more equal.”
That would have been a better victory lane speech.

  2. @motornazi. Where do you get your price of the engine from. Do you personally know the engine builder or the team owner. I think most of us would like the know the real cost. But it seems that if they have spent 80k. It was a good investment. They have won nearly 150k running open shows if my calculations are close. And you must of not of saw silks second pit stop shortly after everyone’s first. He drove from around 15th to 4th on an all green flag run on a track that has no passing. Seems like that made a stragety call and were one caution away from a potential victory.

$80,000? You wish! I get $86,753.09 for one today!

  4. STOP IT ALREADY !

  5. Cadillac Bill says

Great race! 28 tour mods! Thank you KT for all of your hard work to make this the best modified race in NYS.

  6. Is there any place where I can find a replay or highlights? From what I heard Andy Jankowiak was supposed to be at Claremont for the MRS race on Sunday but was involved in a big accident in the ROC race.

  7. Marshall, Andy got collected when Matt Hirschman’s motor blew oiling the back straight and into turn 3. Andy had motor problems as well but since he was in the Mendoza 00 on Saturday there was no time to work on it and I also heard the crew needed a break. The latter may have been in play for other teams as well because the weather Sunday at Claremont was picture perfect and they only had 18 cars show for that good purse.

  8. ROC is one of the series on Racingamerica.TV which is a subscription like FloRacing.

  9. @Rudder I have a subscription to racingamerica but couldn’t find a replay at the time. Haven’t looked since, but I did find a clip on twitter showing Hirschman on fire.
