The Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series closes out its 2024 season Saturday with the running of the USNEPower Haunted Hundred at Seekonk Speedway. The Haunted Hundred was the site of one of the most memorable and ugliest incidents in the 11-year history of the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series in 2019.
The 2019 season for the Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series ended in a shower of sparks of wrecked cars on the final lap of the Haunted Hundred at Seekonk Speedway.
On the final lap of the event Ron Silk passed Matt Hirschman for the lead through turns one and two. Going into turn three Hirschman went through the grass to come back out on the track and intentionally take out Silk and causing mayhem coming to the checkered flag.
“I think he’s an asshole,” Silk said of Hirschman. “… I understand it’s the last lap, listen, obviously he’s a really good racer, but what he did today was ridiculous.”
After the incident Hirschman said he thought Silk raced him dirty in turn one.
“I thought he drove in there and basically drove through me [in turn one] and in return I drove through him.”
Matt Swanson, who was running third on the final lap of the event but ended up getting caught up in the mess when Hirschman took out Silk said this about Hirschman’s move after the race: “Matt Hirschman being Matt Hirschman. That’s all it is. … [Silk] made a clean pass. [Silk] races aggressive but he doesn’t overly aggressively wreck someone. When you’re four wheels in the dirt before the corner event starts, that’s blatantly taking someone out.”
Hirschman, who took the checkered flag on the track as the race winner, was disqualified by Monaco Modified Tri-Track Series officials.
The next day Hirschman issued an apology for the incident.
