Thirty Two Signs Honey Badger Of The Week Award: Denny Hamlin

When you know sticking your face in the bee’s nest will get you stung, and yet you keep on doing it over and over again, well that’s total Honey Badger style.

The fact is, Denny Hamlin epitomized Honey Badger style last during and after last Sunday’s Subway Fresh Fit 500 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event

Thanks to Randall and his glorious YouTube classic, we all know this, “Honey Badger don’t care.”

According to Randall: “The honey badger has been referred to by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most fearless animal in all of the animal kingdom.”

So we know the Honey Badger: “Just takes what he wants. He has no regard for any other animal whatsoever.”

Therein lies the gist of the Honey Badger of the Week Award.

That showed on the final lap of the event when Hamlin put it all on the line with a banzai move across the apron to go for the win. Hamlin ended up in a side-by-side banging battle with Jimmie Johnson coming to the finish line, with Johnson edging him for second place.

Then after the race, Hamlin who came for the rear of the field, made some comments on the television about how NASCAR’s ballyhooed new Gen 6 cars aren’t the greatest for passing during events.

Uh oh. It’s a place Hamlin has been before. Negative comments get the sanctioning body mad.

In Randall’s famous video there’s a scene where the Honey Badger “goes right into the house of bees to get some larva”.

“Look, the Honey Badger doesn’t care, it’s getting stung like 1,000 times, it doesn’t give a ….”

That’s Hamlin. Fined before for making negative comments, Hamlin couldn’t help himself. And on Thursday it was revealed that Hamlin was fined $25,000 for daring to say something negative about the Gen 6 car. Hamlin’s response? He said he won’t pay the fine.

As Randall says: “The Honey Badger is really pretty badass” and it’s hard not to say the same for Hamlin these days.
