Each week during the 2013 racing season the New England Racing Fuel RaceDayCT Performer of the Week will be chosen from among drivers competing in events in the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series weekly division competitors at Stafford Motor Speedway, Thompson International Speedway and the Waterford Speedbowl.
Each week’s winner will receive a $20 certificate for race fuel from New England Racing Fuel. Drivers must have a Sunoco Race Fuel decal on their car to be eligible for the weekly award.
This week’s New England Racing Fuel RaceDayCT Performer of the Week Award goes to Waterford Speedbowl Street Stock division driver Steve Barrett of Preston.
While Barrett finished 11th in Saturday’s 50-lap Street Stock feature at the Speedbowl, it was really the circumstances surrounding his appearance on the track Saturday that deserved celebration.
Barrett, a member of the National Guard’s 1109th Theatre Aviation Maintenance Support Group, was deployed to Afghanistan last July. He hadn’t raced at Waterford since wrecking his car at the track in April 2012.
Barrett recently returned from Afghanistan and Saturday at Waterford he was presented with a new race car courtesy of the Racers for a Soldier group put together by a number of those involved in the Speedbowl racing community.
The Racers for a Soldier project was led by Jeff Winsor of Moosup. Through fund raising efforts and the donations of many in the racing community over the last 10 months, the group was able to complete the building of a new car for Barrett.
After being presented with the new car Saturday during opening ceremonies at the track, Barrett took some practice laps in it and then returned to feature competition.
