But in 2013 at Stafford there’s not much about being at the track that doesn’t put a smile on the face of the Belchertown, Mass. driver.

Gray put his distaste for extra distance races in the rear view Friday as he drove to victory in the 60-lap Late Model feature at Stafford Speedway. The division normally runs 30-lap features weekly.

“I cannot thank my crew and all my sponsors enough,” Gray said. “I’ve never in my life had a good finish in a long distance race. The best way to do it is win it. I’ve got to congratulate my crew. Without these guys we wouldn’t be here this season.”

It was the fifth victory in 13 events this year at Stafford for Gray and his 12th consecutive podium finish. Gray’s only finish outside the top three this season was an 18th in the season opening event.

“It’s our dream season,” Gray said. “You usually only have one of these in a lifetime and we’re going to keep going until it’s over.”

Woody Pitkat of Stafford was second and Jay Stuart of Preston third.

Gray started 12th in the feature and methodically made his way to the front.

Gray used some aggressive maneuvering to get under Tom Fearn for the lead in turn one on lap 55, but it was all for naught as the caution flew before the lap was completed, giving Fearn the top spot back.

But Gray went under Fearn for the lead on the ensuing restart coming off of turn four and never trailed again, making his way through three more restarts while out front.

“It seems like whenever I get close up there it’s caution after caution,” Gray said. “It was a long distance race, I took my time, exercised patience.”

Said Pitkat: “Congratulations to Adam. He’s been really fast this year, he’s had a really good car. We’re still working on our car to get it better.”

Gray now holds a massive 72 point lead over second place Tom Fearn in the division standings with five events remaining.
