It looks as if Doug Coby and Ryan Preece are readying for fall championship battles on two fronts of Modified racing locally.

Coby went a long way in changing the complexion of championship battles in both the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour and Stafford Motor Speedway SK Modified division on Friday evening at Stafford.

Coby’s victory in the Whelen Modified Tour CarQuest 150 at Stafford, coupled with Preece’s 16th place finish, helped Coby move to second place in the standings, 25 points behind Preece. Coby came into the evening 45 points behind Preece in third in the standings.

And Coby’s second place finish in the 40-lap SK Modified feature, combined with Preece’s 14th place in that event, launched Coby from third in the standings to the lead in that division.

Coby, who does not have a victory in the division this year, now leads Preece by six points. He trailed Preece by 18 points going into the event Friday with Woody Pitkat in second, six points behind Preece. Pitkat’s 17th place dropped him to third in the standings, 18 behind Coby.

Preece’s rough finish was thanks to contact with Dan Avery while battling for the lead during the first attempt at a green-white-checkered finish Friday. It was the second time this season that Preece and Avery have had issues on the track racing for the lead.

But the Preece-Avery battles are hardly the only feud heating up of late. Preece and Pitkat exchanged words in victory lane after Preece’s victory on July 26.

And Coby had some choice words for 55-year old Ted Christopher, the track’s all-time winningest driver, after the two had some scuffles Friday evening.

“I guess he’s a little old these days so he can’t see if there’s a car on the outside of him,” Coby said over the track’s PA system following his second place finish in the SK Modified feature.

At the end of the night Coby was predicting exciting times on the horizon for the division.

“It’s going to be an interesting August and September up here,” Coby said. “There’s a lot of battles. A lot of feuds. People are not happy with each other and the SK’s are just out of control. Slow cars are up front are jamming people. … There’s not a lot of respect.”

  1. I would like to see Ted tie both of his hands behind his back and still woop that little pukes butt

  2. So you think you can dance the music is playing and the Sk modified are dancing, come watch the show

  3. Loving all the Preece haters on and off the track. Avery ran him down, and took him out of the race because he knew it was the only chance he had. The best part was when he restarted in the top spot, and STILL couldn’t pull off the win.

  4. Hey Doug, you are always complaining about slower cars starting up front, what do you want to do, make stafford a tour type boring show?
