WATERFORD – Rob Janovic Jr. hit the track and could feel that he had the best setup under him of the season.

And then he made it count.

Janovic went to the lead with 24 laps remaining and then never trailed again on the way to victory in the 35-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modified feature Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

It was the first victory of the season for Janovic, of Waterford.

“This is about the closest we’ve come to having the car right all year,” Janovic said. “And it showed, we won the race.”

Keith Rocco of Wallingford was a distant second and Tim Jordan of Plainfield third.

Janovic went by Shawn Monahan for what would turn out to be the race-winning pass on lap 11.

“First person when I came into the pits that I shook hands with was Shawn Monahan,” Janvoic said. “Because wrestling the lead away from him can be tough, but we go back a long time. He ran me perfectly clean, it was fun. I almost wish it lasted longer because it was so much fun.”

Rocco made a late charge to the podium, going to third with six laps left and passing Jordan for second with two laps left, but ran out of time.

“When my spotter told me that [Rocco] had broken into second I said ‘Come on, no caution, no caution.’” Janovic said. “I knew that we had it as long as we went green. I know it would have been fun racing Keith for the win but I’d rather not. I’d rather just win it the way we did.”
