STAFFORD – Fast was the theme for Woody Pitkat during the majority of the opening weekend for the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour at Thompson Speedway for the Icebreaker April 5-6.

Pitkat led the way in Modified Tour practice at Thompson and followed that up by winning his first career Whelen Modified Tour pole.

Pitkat, in his first event for Buzz Chew Racing, led much of the Icebreaker 150 before losing the lead late in the event to Justin Bonsignore and settling for a second place finish.

It seems that speed he found so much of in the season opener at Thompson has carried right over to Stafford Motor Speedway.

Pitkat, of Stafford, led the way in practice Saturday at Stafford in preparation for Sunday’s Whelen Modified Tour Spring Sizzler 200 at Stafford.

Pitkat toured the half-mile oval with a fast lap of 18.035 seconds (99.806 mph) during the one hour and 45 minute practice session for the division.

Reigning Whelen Modified Tour champion Ryan Preece of Berlin was second fastest at 18.080 seconds (99.558 mph). Doug Coby, the 2012 series champion from Miford, was third fastest (18.081, 99.552 mph).

Bonsignore, of Holtsville, N.Y., was fourth fastest (18.148, 99.184 mph) and Donny Lia of Jericho, N.Y. fifth fastest (18.154, 99.152 mph).
