WATERFORD – Back to basics was the perfect formula to get the job done for Vin Esposito Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Esposito started on the pole, drove away from the field and had enough to hold off a charging Keith Rocco over the final laps to win the 30-lap Late Model feature at Waterford Saturday.

It was the first Late Model victory at Waterford for Esposito, of Waterbury, since 2011.

Rocco, of Wallingford, was second and Jason Palmer of Berlin third.

After winning the first five events of the year in the Late Model division, Rocco saw perfect streak snapped last week when he finished second to Bruce Thomas Jr. last week.

“We struggled for a few weeks,” Esposito said. “Keith set the bar so high that we tried stuff that, man it just didn’t work. So I went back to squre one and man, this is my opening day setup. It’s back. It was a good time.”

Rocco’s charge to cut a huge Esposito’s huge lead over the final 10 laps had the race-winner overdriving just a bit as the laps waned.

“We had enough, that’s all that matters,” Esposito said. “It’s get nerve wracking. With Keith, we’re looking at domination in everything. I was clear by 10-car lengths, then all of the sudden it’s six, then it’s four, I’m counting laps. I almost felt like a rookie.”

Said Rocco: “The racing has been unbelievable down here. … Got to congratulate Vin on his win. He ran and got out front quick.”
