WATERFORD – Jeff Lee rolled to his first career victory in the 25-lap Mini Stock feature Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Pete Zaikarite of Niantic was second and Garrett Denton of Hope Valley, R.I. third.

Lee said it was focus and not nerves ruling over the closing laps on the way to his first checkered flag as a winner.

“I didn’t pay attention to the flags, Lee said. “It was just go.”

Randy Churchill Jr. of Oakdale held off rookie Paul Buzel of Trumbull to win the 25-lap SK Light Modified feature.

Corey Barry of Plainfield was third.

“My last two races sucked,” Churchill said. “We finally fixed the car. We found some issues with it, motor-wise and handling-wise and we got to run up front. The car has been running really hot in traffic. … Running up front was the only way to keep it cool. … It was fun though, a lot of fun. That kid [Buzel] is good.”

On Father’s Day weekend, it was Allen Coates rolling to victory in front of his son and daughter.

Coates, of Ledyard, won the 25-lap New England Truck Series feature. Chris Correll of Uncasville was second and Corey Coates of Ledyard third.

In addition to racing against his son Corey, Allen Coates’ daughter Cassy Coates was also in the event. She finished 12th.

It was the 83rd career Waterford Speedbowl victory for Allen Coates.

“My son talked so much junk to me, I had to win today,” Allen Coates said. “He won at Monadnock [Speedway in Winchester, N.H. on May 31], I’m proud of him. But this is my racetrack.”
