WATERFORD – Wayne Burroughs made his first victory of the season a dramatic one Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Burroughs, of Oakdale, used a last corner pass of Doug Curry to win the 25-lap Mini Stock feature Saturday at Waterford.

“We wanted it bad,” Burroughs said. “It’s been a rough season, a lot of bad luck. The car has been fast, we just couldn’t put it all together until tonight.”

Curry, of Groton, was second and Ray Christian III of Groton third.

With the two battling side-by-side, Curry led in the top lane taking the white flag. But in the turn four coming to the checkered Burroughs gave Curry a slight bump that got him the advantage he needed to take over the lead.

“I figured if I could just move him up a little it would help me and it made him get back in the gas a little later than he wanted to,” Burroughs said. “It proved to be the difference. It’s a tough division. The cars are so equal and you’ve got to do everything you can to get every inch you can and we just do everything we can.”

Curry wasn’t upset with the full contact action in the closing moments.

“We got wicked free as the race went on,” Curry said. “We got up on the high side with five [laps] to go and it got a little better, I just couldn’t get the run going into the corner. Wayne got into the last corner a little better than me and got me at the line. But I’m not going to complain. We’ve been finishing way in the back the past couple weeks. We had so much bad luck. I’ve got to thank all guys for sticking by me.”

  1. I am so proud of my son, he started going to the races at a very young age with his granny Janet Noyes and grew a great passion for it. His dad Wayne Sr. Helped him get into his first race car and Wayne just took it from there. I love you Wayne and am so happy for you, no one deserves this more.
