WATERFORD – Al Stone III showed Saturday that the horses under his hood possess a mighty finishing kick.

Stone used a pass of Joe Arena out of the final corner to win the 25-lap Street Stock feature Saturday at the Waterford Speedbowl.

It was the second victory of the season for Stone, of Durham.

Arena, of Bristol, was second and Josh Galvin of Franklin third on the track.

After the event track officials announced that Arena was disqualified, as well as fourth place finisher Bill McNeil of Preston. It moved Galvin to second place and Phil Evans of Uncasville to third.

Arena led Stone to his outside by a quarter of a car length at the white flag. Stone remained to the outside through turns one and two on the final lap, with Arena still leading going into turn three.

In turn four Stone edged to the front off the corner and led be about a foot at the checkered.

“Going into the turn I just wanted to keep driving as hard as I could while keeping the car under control because I knew that Joe was going to do what he had to do to win,” Stone said. “Coming out of [turn] four I just put my foot to the floor and I saw the wall coming. But I knew Joe would give us the room and respect. He pulled down and gave me the outside and the awesome horsepower got me the win.

“That was absolutely the power from Larry’s Auto Machine that got us this win tonight. That thing was like a drag car down the straightaway. It was absolutely awesome.”

Said Arena: “I got beat by one of the best at this place. Al Stone is definitely one of the best in this division and he legitimately beat me. It was an awesome race. We leaned on each other, but that’s what it’s all about. It was a lot of fun.”

The 6 was DQ due to not being able to remove the heads and intake because the motor is a sealed 602 crate motor. read page 5 on the Tech manual.

  2. you mean sealed, like the ACT 603, or SK lite 602 that they are more than familiar with, for the last several years, and have never required an on site tear down?

That was a good race except for the Speedbowl officials…when the 18 & the 55 came together on the front stretch the flagman threw the yellow…FOR WHAT?…if it was for the 18 & 55 they should of went to the rear…also in the Late models the 5 car was sent to the rear twice for dumping 2 different cars, maybe they should have parked him for the night…isn’t that the same guy that was drunk and running over equipment last year?, and you officials allowed him back?…shame on you!…I wish someone would please buy the Speedbowl and get it back like it was in the 80’s when 7-A productions was running it
