Lee Pulliam Wins Third Whelen All-American Series National Title; Four Locals In Top-12 Nationally

For the third time in the last four years the stage will be in honor of Lee Pulliam in December in Charlotte at the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series banquet.

Pulliam, of Semora, N.C., captured his third NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship this week.

Pulliam made a late season run to win the title. He also won in 2012 and 2013. Anthony Anders won the title last year.

Keith Rocco of Wallingford, who spent the bulk of the summer on top of the standings, ended up fifth in the country.

Ryan Preece of Berlin was sevent. Ted Christopher of Plainville was eight and Rowan Pennink of Huntingdon Valley, Pa. 12th.

“We ran everywhere we could possibly run,” Pulliam said in a release from NASCAR. “We ran at places we’d never been, and won at places I had never won. It’s really neat to see all the hard work pay off. It was definitely the hardest one we’ve ever won.”

Pulliam finished the season with has 704 points on the strength of 29 wins, 46 top-five’s and 48 top-10’s in 51 starts this year at South Boston (Va.) Speedway, Caraway Speedway in Sophia, N.C, Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va., Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va. and Southern National Raceway in Kenly, N.C.

Under the point structure for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I standings, a race winner receives two points for every car in the event up to 18 cars. Second place receives two fewer points and so on through the field. Three bonus points will be awarded to a race winner with a single-digit starting position and five bonus points will be awarded to a race winner with a double-digit starting position. Whelen All-American Series points season points ran through Sunday, Sept. 20.

Dirt racer Thomas Tillison Jr. of Wellston, OK, finished in second place with 681 points on 15 wins and 25 top-fives in 29 starts at Salina (OK) Highbanks Speedway and Flint Creek Speedway in West Siloam, Ok.

Taylor Holdaway of Orillia, Ontario, who competes in a Late Model at Sunset Speedway in Innisfil, Ontario was third with 676 points on 12 wins and 21 top-fives in 22 starts.

Modified driver Jimmy Zacharias of Candor, N.Y., who competes regularly at Chemung (N.Y) Speedrome and Holland (N.Y) Speedway finished fourth with 670 points on 15 victories and 27 top-fives in 30 starts.

Rocco, the 2010 national champion, who competes full-time in the SK Modified divisions at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, Stafford Speedway and Thompson Speedway, finished with 660 points with 11 victories, 34 top-five’s and 41 top-10’s in 48 starts.

Preece, who competes full-time in the SK Modified divisions at Stafford and Thompson and part-time in the Tour Type Modified division at Riverhead (N.Y.) Raceway finished with 629 points. He finished with 11 wins, 35 top-five’s and 42 top-10’s in 45 starts this year.

Christopher, who competes full-time in the SK Modified divisions at Stafford and Waterford, finished the season with 626 points on eight victories.

Pennink, who competes full-time in the SK Modified division at Stafford, has six wins and finished with 590 points.
