A table overflowed with donated items at the New London-Waterford Speedbowl’s Racers For Racers Toy Drive party Monday in Waterford
WATERFORD – Local racers are often described simply as big boys with their toys.
Monday in Waterford it was racers from the New London-Waterford Speedbowl, along with track staff, crew members and fans celebrating collecting toys.
Speedbowl officials hosted their annual Racers For Racers Toy Drive party Monday at Great Neck Country Club in Waterford.
Track staff, drivers, crew members and fans filled an event room for the evening and left party organizer Mike Serluca with piles of toys to collect.
All the toys donated at the party will be given to Kinship4Kids of Oakdale.
“To do something like this for kids, I mean, I understand what people go through at the holidays, it’s phenomenal to see a table over there full of toys,” Serluca said. “It’s great. This is what the racing community is all about, giving back, especially for people that don’t have a lot. A lot of these guys don’t have a lot either, but they’re doing it.”
Serluca also organized a raffle at the party that raised $1,005 for the Daniel’s Courage Fund, which raises money for teenage cancer patient Daniel Walsh of Griswold.
