Race of Champions management is proud to announce 25 race dates for Modified racing fans, both dirt and asphalt at premier racing facilities throughout the Northeast. Several familiar racing venues join the asphalt and dirt programs along with several new tracks to Race of Champions competitors giving everyone a variety of exciting events throughout the 2016 season to showcase the Race of Champions brand of racing.
“The 2016 schedule continues to be a work in progress,” stated Joe Skotnicki of the Race of Champions. “We’ve put a lot of emphasis on the importance of the schedule. It was our goal to create an exciting yet manageable schedule that gives our constituents all of the opportunities that they are seeking. It’s a challenging task and we are proud of what we have accomplished up to this point, but we will not going to rest on our laurels and continue to drive forward.”
The Race of Champions asphalt Modified Series will embark on 15 race journey, which includes the marquee “Race of Champions 250” on Saturday, September 17 at Oswego Speedway. Oswego will also play host to the 61-lap “Richie Evans Memorial” on Saturday, May 14. Lancaster National Speedway plays host to four events, with the traditional thrillers of the “US Open” (Sunday, September 25) and “Tommy Druar / Tony Jankowiak Memoria”l (Saturday, August 20) returning to the slate as well as the Thursday, June 30 “Ole’ Boy Cup” and the “Queen City Clash” on Sunday, April 17. Mahoning Valley Speedway near Allentown, Pennsylvania will bookend the season with the opener on Saturday, April 9 and the season ending “Oktoberfast” event on Saturday, October 22. Lake Erie Speedway returns to the schedule with an event on Saturday, June 11 and Motordrome Speedway near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is a new facility for the Series with a race on Friday, June 24. The Series will also visit Chemung (N.Y.) Speedrome and Spencer Speedway (Williamson, N.Y.) on two occasions in addition to the yearly stop at Holland (N.Y.) International Speedway in July.
The Race of Champions dirt Modified Series faces 10 challenging dates highlighted by the “New Yorker Race of Champions 200”. A 200-lap event on Saturday, September 10 at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, New York. The traditional “Icebreaker” at Selinsgrove (Penn.) Speedway will take place on Saturday, March 19 followed by the Southern Tier opener at Five Mile Point Speedway (Kirkwood, N.Y.) on Sunday, April 10. The Series then moves to a new track and event on Saturday, April 16 at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park, before returning to Utica-Rome, followed by new dates at Rolling Wheels Raceway (Elbridge, N.Y.), including an event in conjunction with the Short Track Super Series North Region at Rolling Wheels on Wednesday, July 13. The Series will conclude at Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway, which held the first ever Race of Champions event on dirt on Wednesday, September 14.
Work continues on the Race of Champions Sportsman programs on both asphalt and dirt. The Race of Champions asphalt Sportsman Series will be in action at Oswego Speedway on Friday, September 17 as a highlight, while the Race of Champions dirt Crate Sportsman schedule will be highlighted by dates at Ohsweken Speedway in Ontario, Canada on Monday, July 25 along with stops at Freedom (Delavan, N.Y.) Motorsports Park on Saturday, July 2 and Friday, September 2. The entire Race of Champions Sportsman schedules will be released in the near future.
The Race of Champions is a sanctioning body presenting Modified and Stock Car racing on asphalt and dirt surfaces throughout the Northeast, with events in New York, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. The 66th annual Race of Champions weekend will take place in 2016 and is the second longest consecutive auto-racing event in North America, second only to the Indianapolis 500.
