The Confederate flag, long a staple symbol seen at NASCAR events, has been banned from events by the sanctioning body.
NASCAR announced Wednesday they will no longer allow Confederate flags to be displayed at their events.
It was a newly introduced policy that quickly enraged a substantial portion of NASCAR’s fan base. Social media ignited with fury from many Wednesday upon announcement of the new rule. Some view the flag as a point of Southern pride and NASCAR heritage, while other’s see it as a symbol of racial division and hate.
A statement Wednesday from NASCAR read:
“The presence of the confederate flag at NASCAR events runs contrary to our commitment to providing a welcoming and inclusive environment for all fans, our competitors and our industry. Bringing people together around a love for racing and the community that it creates is what makes our fans and sport special. The display of the confederate flag will be prohibited from all NASCAR events and properties.”
Earlier this week driver Bubba Wallace, the only black driver who competes regularly in the NASCAR Cup Series, told CNN it was time to “get rid of all Confederate flags.”
“No one should feel uncomfortable when they come to a NASCAR race. So it starts with Confederate flags. Get them out of here. They have no place for them,” Wallace said.
The comments from Wallace came following Sunday’s Cup Series event at Atlanta Motor Speedway where NASCAR addressed racial tensions across the United States in the wake of countrywide protests and riots in response to the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer.
Before the race began at Atlanta the field was stopped on the track and NASCAR president Steve Phelps addressed drivers and TV viewers saying: “Our country is in pain and people are justifiably angry, demanding to be heard. The black community and all people of color have suffered in our country and it has taken far too long for us to hear their demands for change. Our sport must do better. Our country must do better.”
Cup Series drivers also produced a short video addressing racial inequality which was broadcast Sunday.
In 2015 NASCAR had requested that fans to stop displaying the Confederate flag at events.

The Confederate Flag represents a very dark time in our country. A time when brothers fought brothers.A time of division. I’m glad NASCAR has done this. A race track is a place where you should feel safe.
I could care less either way. It’s not going to attract any new fans. And who knows if it’ll create the loss of fans. It will be interesting how it’s handled at local tracks. Last time I seen that flag was at Thompson last year.

I applaud this decision. When I tell people I’m a NASCAR fan, or just a fan of short track racing in general people don’t believe me. Why? I don’t fit the stereotype; I have a full set of teeth and I’m college educated. It’s nice to see the top level of stock car racing move into this century. Those that are upset and want to leave the sport? Go ahead, I don’t want you associated with the sport I love anyway.
This was so big nationally I was hoping RaceDayCt would take a pass on this particular press release. Predictably it exploded on social media and painted a rather ugly image of the racing community complete with a confederate flag. I’m not saying it shouldn’t have been said only I wish for whatever reason it hadn’t.
I did look at the map and we are still in the Northeast. Many of our ancestors were wounded, imprisoned and died fighting armies carrying that flag. Many are buried in our cemetery’s and their names on town green memorials. Forgetting that, the stars and bars that is the second confederate flag adopted in 1863 represents something far more sinister then a generic reference to hate implies. The right of individual States to continue an economic system that depended on abducting, transporting in brutal conditions and enslavement of human beings for their and their offspring’s natural lives ………forever. I suppose many think of the proud people that fought under the stars and bars nobly as perpetual underdogs and simply fighting to preserve their way of life. Unfortunately their right to freedom depended on the enslavement of human beings.
We have a flag as well. It represents centuries of turmoil, growth, prosperity, poverty, ill conceived wars and a few dirty deeds. However it also was the flag that did free the slaves, fought to beat back a German invasion in WWI, freed countries and people all around the world in WWII, fought a successful cold war against an oppressive USSR and freed Kuwait from Iraq. It’s the flag of a people that may not have always done the right thing but never sought to purposely oppress, subjugate or enslave any group of people.
I understand why southerners would defend the confederate flag remembering the bravery in battle against long odds and conveniently forgetting the enslavement of human beings. What is really confusing is how so many people in the Northeast and especially race fans defend the confederate flag with such passion.
Why now Dareal. I will tell you. The video of a dirt bag cop kneeling on the neck of a handcuffed grown man as he cries for his mom. That video was so disturbing to watch. That POS cop will single handedly go down as person who got police reform. The question will be, is he a racist POS, or just a bully cop who acted like a tough guy to everyone. Trying to look like a bad ass in front of his rookie cops. He already had four brutality complaints against him, so I blame the police unions as equally culpable. They defend dirt bag cops forever under the disguise of they have tough jobs, make split second decisions, blah, blah, blah. IMO, you get one complaint of excessive force and you are on probation the rest of your career. 2nd complaint you’re done. In my town, we already have two paid out complaints of excessive force on one cop, yet he’s still on the job. How the hell is that possible?

Here’s a very disgusting consequence of the Rodney King case. The police claimed that any recording of their police activity was illegal because it posed a security and safety risk to the officers. It took many years of court battles, and people being wrongly accused and charged by the police for recording police, before the Supreme Court determined that it is perfectly fine to record police in action. So if a LEO should ever tell you to stop recording, make sure you record that, and keep recording. Rodney King was brutally beaten by LA police on March 3, 1991. Almost 30 years ago. And the list of other people that wrongly perished at the hands or bullets of police is long.
Police would arrest and charge those recording police, and make their live miserable.
So why now? Why the outrage?
Well, thank Steve Jobs. Since the proliferation of smartphones, all those billions of cameras out there have been recording police malfeasance. It’s no longer the word of the LEO vs the victim. The LEO almost always won. Now, the tables are turning. The cameras are rolling.
There was a study a few years ago that concluded that complaints against police were down a HUGE amount, and it was attributed to all the cameras out there. The police can’t hide or abuse their authority, privilege, or blue wall any more. The liability costs to municipalities and taxpayers has been dramatically reduced because of the ability of the public to oversee the police with all those cameras.
Interestingly, just about a year ago, a LEO pulled over a guy for suspicious reasons. The guy happened to be a lawyer. Hey started recoding the incident right from the beginning. The LEO kept telling him to stop recording blah-blah-blah. That cop was dismissed for attempting to suppress the guy from recording the incident.

Earl, the good deeds of a few cops does not forgive the malfeasance of just one bad cop. The good cops are good cops. The bad cops are bad cops. Bad cops have to be exposed and eliminated. Who is supposed to do that? Since the police must police themselves, bad deeds by bad cops makes all of them look bad. Even if George Floyd did all those things, he did his time and sentences. The cop was not to act as judge jury and executioner, regardless of previous record. Floyd’s previous record had nothing to do with the alleged phony $20 bill and his take down.
And the cop that did the killing knew Floyd. They worked together. They knew each other. When you watch that video, don’t you think the cop would have been far more reasonable if he knew the guy, as in try to talk to him? After all, Flowd was cuffed and had two other cops holding him down.

I say don’t defund the police. Defunding them will make the situation worse. The police need more funding to be used for better training, and to create better oversight. We need to break the “silent blue line”. We need to establish ways where if a cop sees something, they can safely say something without repercussions. Prosecutors need better oversight to make sure innocent people don’t end up in jail, and that guilty people can’t buy their way out of jail. We need to look at sentencing guidelines so that the time matches the crime. We need to look at prison reform so people who go to prison have a chance at succeeding once released from prison. And the list goes on.
We also need social reform. Bank oversight, to make sure your loan application isn’t determined by the color of your skin. Among other things.

How many times has a cop turned in a bad cop?
There is far more police brutality going on that never gets recorded, and therefore it is all based on the word of the LEO.
When the blue line (union) is used to protect bad cops, it makes all cops bad cops and systematically discredits an entire police department.
How many cops have broken with the blue code and spoke out against the illegal, unprofessional conduct, and corruption within the police force? And that’s another issue, the police should not be referred to as a “force”.

I think most reasonable people know that not all cops are bad, and truly believe most are good.
All occupations include some who are incompetent, and a few who are downright bad actors. To me, the presence of three other officers in Minneapolis and the murderer’s disciplinary record shows that was not happening.

That is a profoundly stupid post and false equivalence. The police are all adults, are supposedly well trained, and have a union to live up to and protect them. They behave like a close knit tribe. The protection of one another in the tribe comes first above all else. When the tribe protects their deviant members, they are aiding and abetting that deviant behavior, transgressions, law breaking, etc. Refusing to report deviant tribe members is aiding and abetting.

Hypothetically, what would happen if NASCAR banned a certain multi colored stripped flag? It’s symbolizes a special interest. While welcomed by some, it is a divisive symbol to others. For corporate America, companies have flown this flag outside their facilities to represent all are welcome, but not without creating some division amongst rank and file employees. June just happens to be their month of celebration. How does a private company like NASCAR draw the line at what is divisive and what is not.
Great move by NASCAR, long overdue. I am sure the 18 people murdered in Chicago over a 24 hour period can now rest in peace knowing that there will be no more Confederate flags flown at NASCAR races.
Homer, while it might be a divisive flag for some it does not represent hate. It does not represent a group that went against the USA. What’s more important substance or perception?
Trump projects the image of toughness and it’s part of the reason he is so popular with a segment of the population. What’s tough about a privileged youth, fast track entry into business, draft avoidance, pampered adult life style, sexual dalliances, teams of public and private body guards and lawyers to protect him. The tough guy image resonated because it was so different then that of tradition politicians that many feel are squishy and contemptuous by nature.
So there he is at rallies, balling up his fists and punching the air with a rhetorical flourish and the crowd loves it. Blunt, tough talk directed at foreign leaders, perceived adversaries, regular citizens almost always from afar and with an array of protection. Try to poke holes in it all you like but it makes no difference. Trump supporters believe he’s tough and that’s all that counts.
George Floyd did have a criminal record and is very much a flawed martyr. But the symbol of a cause much bigger has resonated just like the Trump tough guy image. Floyds past is of no consequence as much as those on the right would like people to believe. The only thing that’s importance now is the injustice his death represents.
You can say Trump isn’t tough and you can say Floyd does not deserve to be a symbol for equal justice and you’d have a great case to make in both instances. It doesn’t make any difference.

Allot of cities, and some states, have taken steps to institute change. There are multiple problems with the “few bad apples” theory in policing. For example
– The instances where the bad apples get called out by the good apples are damned few and far between. It has a name: The Blue Code, aka The Blue Wall of Silence. Police unions protect too many bad cops. Gee, what other type of group enforces a “no snitch” policy?
– A false accusation can have mammoth ramifications; it can cost you your savings, your job, your family, your freedom or your life. In the past few days, I’ve watched videos of cops doing the following: Harass two black kids, and arrest one (who became belligerent), for jaywalking (OK); repeatedly force a weapon INTO the hands of a suspect that was on the ground and being subdued (NYC, I believe); and manufacture an opportunity to gang tackle and arrest a peaceful (though noisy) protestor by causing him to bump into a police officer (Nassau County). And these jackals were being recorded. Imagine what happens when the body cams get turned off.
– Police leave the station every day authorized to use DEADLY force on civilians. Who else has that power? Damned right they need to be held to a higher standard — a massively higher standard.

If the Pride flag is flown, it only pisses off the Evangelicals. Trump is pandering to the Evangelicals for votes by not flying the Pride Flag. Trump needs the votes from the Evangelicals, doesn’t care about the LGBTQ people. The Confederate Flag is all about white supremacy, there should be no argument about that. If banning the Confederate Flag causes divisiveness, and keeps the Deplorables away, I’m good with that. They chose to leave. They were not suppressed or oppressed and forced into duress. Comparing the Pride flag and Confederate flag is as disingenuous a comparison as constantly hijacking a theme of systemic racism and police brutality, and trying to turn it into an attack on the flag and the military, all to cause division. That’s an attempt to squash the very real and legitimate crisis of systemic racism and police brutality.
Homer, re-read your post. I perceive your talking about the LGBQ flag. That flag represents inclusion, that all are welcome. The Confederate flag was flown by people who had ceceeded from the union, so they could continue to own human beings. After the civil war it became a symbol of white supremacy. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and many people fly that flag not realizing it effect on others. If someone wants to fly the Confederate flag at their home they have every right to do so.
NASCAR has simply asked for people not to fly that flag on their property, or at their events, realizing the tie to white supremacy it now carries. In regard to NASCAR owned properties, they have every right, it’s their property. At events at properties NASCAR doesn’t own, I’d say it should be up to the property owner, but would be willing to bet they would side with NASCAR. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an LGBQ flag at a racing event, but don’t see a reason why NASCAR would ban them as they stand for inclusion, not division. That’s just my opinion though, and others may feel differently about it.

Homer, what you are trying to do by comparing the Pride flag and the Confederate flag is similar to what Trump does by conflating kneeling during an anthem in protest to racism and police brutality, with Trump’s accusation that saying that the kneeling was intended to disrespect the flag and military. Totally wrong comparison.
The Pride flag represents anti-discrimination by those that are being discriminated, suppressed and oppressed. All they want is to be treated equally, equal rights. Yaknow, get to enjoy the provisions of the Constitution. Why do you want to prevent that? The Confederate flag represents those that wanted to continue the practice of slavery and white supremacy.
I highly recommend you visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture. You need a couple days to see the whole place. There’s a section that goes through the progression of slavery and settlement, and how the concept of whiteness developed. That’s when and how white supremacy took root. In an interesting twist, white supremacy developed from slavery. The owning of slaves went beyond the seemingly simple transaction of buying and owning labor to reduce cost to your business, to developing a supremacy in civilization that went beyond ownership, to a totalitarian legal authority of whites over blacks.

Trump can and will be judged by history for his slow response to the virus when it reached the US. However he has had no responsibility in it’s spread in Asia, Italy the UK, France, Spain or any other country or region of the world outside the US hit hard by Covid19. I’m not a racist, let me repeat, I’m not a racist. By now you’ve all seen the video footage of the man shot by police at an Atlanta Wendy’s. The policeman was fired, and the chief resigned. The question I pose, was it justified?
Laws differ state by state concerning drunk driving. But I would have to say that A. If you fall asleep in the drive thru, and B. If you fail a field sobriety check, that you would be considered to be intoxicated, and the police would be justified in arresting you. If while being arrested, you resist, get in a scuffle with 2 cops, grab one cops taser, while being tased, and proceed to run away eventually turning and aiming said taser at the police, you might get shot. In Georgia, a taser is considered to be a firearm according to state law. Therefore I’d say, based on the footage I’ve seen, and knowing the law, that the cop was justified for his actions. But apparently others thought otherwise. Where do we draw the line? If that man had managed to pull out a gun and get a shot or shots off we may be looking at a dead cop, or civilian, as there were people present in that parking lot. Being a cop is a very very stressful job. Life changing decisions are made instantaneously, they’re not given time to think things through. Many cops leave their home in the morning, hoping to return home that night unscathed. There probably are a few cops who leave home, hoping to shoot someone, they are the ones giving all cops a bad rap.
Take it one step further, what if the cops had let that guy go, and he ended up killing someone while driving drunk? Where would we be now? Again, I’m not a racist but I do believe that shooting was justified, regardless of the color of the guys skin.

Not all cops are bad. 99% of them are good people. Defunding police forces will only lead to more unnecessary deaths. Police need better training, and more of it. In most cases police training is less than 1 year,yet they hold the power of life and death in their hands. Police should have to go through phycological reviews before even being trained, and at regular intervals while on the job. Until drastic changes are made, these tradgedies will continue to happen. But again, what happened was wrong, but given the current laws, chances are the cop will beat any charges if charges are filed.
In Springfield Massachusetts the city council recently voted ( before George Floyd’s death) to establish an oversight board made up of both city and police officials, as well as city residents. The idea being for better oversight to stop racial and social discrimination by cops. The police union has taken court action to try to stop this from happening. Blue Wall at its best. Regardless of the color of someone’s skin, nobody should die from the unjustified use of force by the police, yet I feel it will continue to happen even with aggressive reform. Again thanks to the “blue Wall of silence”

The state of Massachusetts is offering free Covid testing tommorow June 17th, at 50 sites across the state. The hope is that any Massachusetts resident who recently attended a large gathering (protest) will take advantage, and get tested. The tests are absolutely free to all Massachusetts residents. I would think each flag has to be obviously different from the others, so if the last lap flag incorporated any of the other colors it could be mistaken for the others if waved. Colors like orange may look like the red or yellow in certain lighting.
Other types of racing use multi-colored flags, such as the red and yellow striped surface hazard or black and red meatball, but they aren’t usually waved, they’re held open like a sign for display to the drivers. Road racing uses the white to warn of slow moving vehicles ahead, not the last lap.

The cops involved in the shooting death of Rashard Brooke’s have been charged.
The cop who fired the lethal shots has had 11 charges levied against him including Felony Murder, which if convicted could result in the death sentence. The second cop had 3 charges brought, but has also turned states witness.
This is the 9th time a Fulton county cop has been charged for a homicide, all the victims were black.

I saw the DA’s news conference yesterday. Some very disturbing stuff came out. What I had said the other day was based on info from an interview CNN did with the former county prosecutors. I have always believed that the shooting was not justified, but that former prosecutor had said that barring common sense, going strictly by the laws of the state of Georgia, that the shooting could be rules as justified. I don’t think he knew the guy was aiming an empty taser, or allot of other facts that came out yesterday. I’m glad to see all the charges being pursued, that cop should have to pay for his behavior.
