Purse Structure Announced For Thompson Speedway Weekly Divisions

(Press Release from American-Canadian Tour)

More Than $23,000 in Posted Awards Per Event Set Between Five Divisions For 2021

American-Canadian Tour (ACT) and Pro All Star Series (PASS) officials have announced the purse structure for the five weekly divisions set for competition at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park in 2021.

A total of nearly $24,000 in posted awards have been set to be distributed to the Sunoco Modifieds, Late Models, SK Light Modifieds, Limited Sportsman, and Mini Stocks at each event. All five divisions will compete as part of the six-race oval track event schedule at Thompson, which begins with the annual Icebreaker on April 10-11. The schedule also includes four Wednesday night races in the summer (June 16, July 7, August 11 & September 15) and the Sunoco World Series (October 8-10).

“When Tom (Mayberry) and I agreed to take on this role at Thompson, one of our priorities was posting a fair purse for all divisions,” ACT managing partner Cris Michaud said. “I raced for 20+ years, and I experienced firsthand the value of an extra dollar. We’ve put together a competitive structure that rewards everyone who shows up and will help teams get their cars to the track.”

The roar of the Sunoco Modifieds will return to the high-banks with drivers chasing a $1,500 winning prize for their 30-lap feature races. With $900 on the line for second, $600 for third and $200 to start each race, the Sunoco Modified purse itself rises over $8,500. Some of the top names in local Modified racing are expected to compete, including Keith Rocco, who looks to continue his dominance of the competitive class on Thompson’s 0.625-mile oval. Other names expected for the opener include Troy Talman, a former Thompson winner.

The Late Models, which will again follow ACT Tour rules — including the addition of the new Hoosier tire — will chase $1,200 to win. As part of a purse better than $7,000 throughout the field, Late Model drivers will open the season with a 40-lap special at the Icebreaker. They will continue to thrill Thompson fans with some of the top competitors from across New England. Names like Woody Pitkat, who swept both races in 2020, along with Nick Johnson, defending ACT Tour Rookie of the Year Derek Gluchacki and more will be in competition.

The Limited Sportsman are set to return with a purse over $3,000 of their own and $350 on the line to win. Known as one of the most exciting divisions at Thompson each year, the Limited Sportsman keep fans on the edge of their seat with two, and often three-wide action throughout the field.

Early entries for the season include former Thompson champions Kyle Gero and Larry Barnett, along with former Seekonk Speedway Sportsman champion Corey Fanning. At the Icebreaker, Limited Sportsman drivers may also take the opportunity to compete in a 8-Cylinder Open Street Stock open on Saturday, which pays $1,000 to win.

Rising over $3,000, the SK Light Modified purse includes another $350 to win, with $250 for second and a strong distribution of funds throughout the field. As a division that puts some of the youth of Modified racing and veterans together, it’s expected to be another stout year.

The Mini Stock thunder will return to Thompson with feature races set for $200 to win and over $1,600 in presented awards. Early entries for the season include Thompson veterans Russ Barboza, Tommy Silva and former division champion Steve Michalski.

Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park opens its 82nd season of oval track racing with the Icebreaker on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11. The 10-division card includes the $10,000-to-win Icebreaker 125 for the Thompson Outlaw Open Modified Series, the PASS Super Late Models, and five Thompson weekly divisions. The 8-Cylinder Street Stock Open, NEMA Lites, and EXIT Realty Pro Truck Challenge round out the card. An optional Test N’ Tune practice day is slated for Friday, April 9 with all Icebreaker divisions welcome.

Advance sale tickets for both days are available at www.happsnow.com/event/Thompson-Speedway-Motorsports-Park-YHPQ. Grandstand attendance is limited to 50% capacity due to COVID-19 guidelines.

Better than Stafford across every division….good things happening at the big T this year…

  2. Pay the purse and they will come…. These Men are Racers…. They will have great success.. Extremely Happy that the Racing will continue at my Favorite track .. If I only had one track to introduce someone to Modified Racing … Thompson High Banks would be my First Choice … Two lanes of side by side Racing with the Fastest speeds other than NHIS it really separates the Men from the Boys … Bringing back the 300 was Brilliant !!!!

  3. Speedbowl,

I’m not picking a side here, but just stating for facts sake. Outside of the Late Model division, the regular event purses for the other divisions are pretty much the same between both tracks. And obviously that’s not taking into account additional contingency awards, which to my knowledge there are quite a few more contingency awards in play at Stafford. Also Stafford has announced a $33,000 point fund for end of the season awards. I haven’t seen what point fund plans are in play for Thompson’s divisions. Overall between the five divisions the Thompson regular event purse is $23,795 and the Stafford regular event purse is $21,945. That’s a difference of $1,850. Of that $1,850 difference, $1750 is accounted for in the difference between the Late Model purses. So basically take away the difference in the Late Model purses and the basic regular event numbers are essentially the same for the four other divisions. I don’t think it needs to be turned into a competition really. Two tracks that are both doing very well in giving back to their competitors.

    SK Modified
    Thomspon: $8,560
    Stafford: $8,560

    Late Model
    Thompson: $7,125
    Stafford: $5,375

    SK Light Modified
    Thompson: $3,255
    Stafford: $3,030

    Limited Sportsman/Limited Late Model:
    Thompson Limited Sportsman: $3,160
    Stafford Limited Late Model: $3,030

    Mini Stock/Street Stock
    Thompson Mini Stock: $1,695
    Stafford Street Stock: $1,950

  4. sShawn, I was going to say the same thing. The only reason the Mod purse is the same, is they are paying 200 to start as opposed to 150. 3-5 at Stafford pays better and thats better

  5. 🌈🦄2020 says

They’re not weekly divisions. They’re monthly divisions. And thanks to all the fans that have been complaining forever about not having a single day ticket option. Now if you want to go to the whole icebreaker you get to pay $75. The same price for a pit pass. I see comments on FB thanking them for the weekend “discount” pit pass. $75 is a discount? What were they paying to get in the pits for the last icebreaker?

  6. 🌈🦄2020, if you went to the track, you’d know.

  7. Capt Mike Qbvious says

🌈🦄2020, as far as I know, anyone who wants to can lease the Thompson Speedway oval and put on an event. Plenty of other race tracks around the country are for sale or lease, too. Go show us how it should be done instead of just complaining in the comment section.

  8. “🌈🦄2020, if you went to the track, you’d know”.

And this comes from someone who attended how many races in 2020? And said he won’t attend one until the last recorded COVID-19 death?

  9. wmass01013 says

That coming from a guy that stayed in his basement alll of 2020

  10. Fast Eddie says

2020, here’s my “counterpoint” to your view of the Icebreaker price. If we could pay at the gate it would be $65 for both days without the service charges, and yes it’s more than the $50 from before. That price was two years ago, and not offered by someone renting the track during a pandemic with 25% capacity. If you look at the two days as separate events and compare them to similar single day events, most PASS races are $25-$35and most Open Modified races are $30-$40. Lastly, if you can only go one day, you’re not paying for a two-day ticket. For the record, I already have both of my Thompson tickets, however can only go to the Sizzler on Sunday, so the “daily tickets” work for me.

  11. Transparency!!
Transparency in the short track racing purses and point funds, and in particular transparency for the various types of modified racing. Weekly races at Thompson and Stafford have disclosed purses via press releases. New Smyrna had all the payout information easily accessible on website. The Tri track series has been tra spare time since day one,
Tracks and series releasing information for the paying fans to see. What a concept. Wonder why NASCAR hasn’t been transparent for its paying customers in about 15 years now? I don’t think it’s because they’ve increased purses and point funds!!!

  12. Phil A I agree.
I’ve never understood why many tracks and series in this business choose not to disclose their purse structures. In a number of ways, that transparency can shed light on both on track and off track goings-on. It can give fans insight on why a driver dug so hard, and possibly bumped someone out of the way, for a seventh or forth place finish. It can also give insight on why a shoe-stringed budget team might disappear mid-season. Knowing what guys and gals are battling for simply adds to the mystique and competition.

  13. Earl wrote, “And this comes from someone who attended how many races in 2020? And said he won’t attend one until the last recorded COVID-19 death?”

Well, how many races I attended in 2020 has nothing to do with the price of tickets, but you are not expected to understand that. That ticket price info is readily available from other sources than being at the track itself. 🌈🦄2020 is far too stupid to know any of that. And it has cost $75 to get into the pits at Thompson for several years if I remember correctly. Both of you expose what idiots y’all are on a regular basis.

Earl, did I really say that I won’t attend a race until the last recorded death? That doesn’t sound like me, since every death could be the last death, and so on, and so on, and so on, and so on… So pull a psycho Doug, or WeldingWonders, and dig up the quote, along with the thread info so I can see what you are paraphrasing. Go ahead, I’ll wait…

wmass01013, I have rarely been in my basement, just to do things like laundry, change the HVAC filter, or get a bottle of rare, fine bourbon from my collection.

  14. The facts are… Tracks have been providing purse payouts for over 20 years!!! We all knew what we were racing for…. That is … Those who actually loaded up the cars and bought pit passes , tires, fuel, This idea of publishing the purse payouts as new information is kinda funny. Each track had a purse payout sheet available to all Competitors , Then when the internet came along , they were always posted in the rules sections or tab for all to see. Looking forward to the Martinsville Va race on the 8th of April heading down to watch that race Live… Good bye Covid… Bring on the 2021 Racing SMORGISBORD !!

  15. Suitcase 🧳 Jake wins!!!!!

The purse, payouts, etc. info has been on entry sheets forever. Along with track specific info, such as gear rule, etc.

The Cup level stopped talking about purse and payouts years ago. The NWMT mods stopped talking about purses and posting winnings years ago. For lots of reasons, but mostly because the fans can not comprehend amounts of money much over a few hundred dollars. Why post winnings of thousands of dollars for the Mods, and millions of dollars for the Cup cars when the fans have no idea how much money that is? We have Doug on here doing his analysis that shows a 32¢ advantage for a season ticket vs the risk of rainouts. When people live by what they have in their pockets, publicizing purses and amounts in the thousands and millions of dollars 💵 💸 adds no value to the racing product.

  16. 🌈🦄2020 says

Oh don’t worry Dafella. I have a sneaking suspicion I’ve been to the tracks just a few more times than you lately. How are those basement walls looking these days?

  17. dareal wiseguy says

thompson cant pay enough with the racing surface being unsafe. its a wonder anyone would consider racing there . they have also outdone themselves on vending. not affordable for the average fan/family quoting da real “thompsons on life support”.

  18. Dadope has a washer and maybe a dryer , heat and air conditioning , 3 bottles with screw tops is not a collection , and if he could read maybe 2020 was going in the stands and wouldn’t need to know pit costs , just like#45 knows everything , smarter than everyone, insults everyone , a real tool , don’t forget he has a beach house too .notice anyone else telling what they own , he’s one of a kind thank God

  20. 🌈🦄2020, is there some sort of juvenile competition on who goes to the track more often?

If you went to a track more than I did in 2020, or lately, congratulations. You are an idiot.

Do you understand why fans were and still are prohibited at major sporting events, or limited to a very small audience? If you don’t, you are an idiot.

I did not go to a single event in 2020. Simply not safe. From the pics that were published, no way I was going. The TrumpPandemic was raging during racing season in 2020. Clearly you are too stupid to understand the ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic. 😷

Even at this (hopefully) 🙏 late stage of the pandemic, outdoor events are still being restricted. 🚫

Prior to 2020, I rarely missed a NWMT event, going back decades. You can’t touch that.

  21. 🌈🦄2020 says

“I did not go to a single event in 2020”. Really Dafella? Thanks captain obvious. “Is there some sort of juvenile competition on who goes to the track more often?” Oh I don’t know Dafella is there? Why do seem to always ask Doug if he’s going to any races? See you at the track in 2021 Dafella. 🤣🤣🤣🤣Riiiiight.

  22. My boy Jimmy Wilson announced the other day that the WMT paid out a $220,000 point fund in a virus stricken, shortened 2020 season. Funny how that news escapes the headlines around here.
Moving forward I think Nascar will announce more of the financials again as they now see value letting people know they pay more per race and have a point fund in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The individual track purses are all relatively equal.

.(DOUG) Your refusal to go to the track shows you refuse to support your local racing scene

  24. JD,

I wasn’t complaining, but apparently you want to drag my work into this argument, so that’s fine.

You said: “Funny how that news escapes the headlines around here.”

Jimmy Wilson posting something on his personal Facebook page is far different from NASCAR putting out an official statement or press release. If NASCAR were to put out a press release or any other official information concerning their 2020 point fund it would have been published here. NASCAR doesn’t announce that information.

Yes, when purses and point funds and such are all added up, ultimately the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour still pays out the most money when it comes to Modified racing. I don’t think anybody is arguing that.

Now, they also collect far more money in all sorts of licensing fees from the teams who participate than any other series does. And they also collect more money in sanctioning fees/purses from the tracks, which ends up in the point fund.

And when it comes to expenses involved overall in participation, it costs a lot more to participate on the Whelen Modified Tour than any other series. So one would it expect since it costs exorbitantly more to play in that sandbox that it would also pay out a lot more right? It’s all a scale of what comes in and what goes out and just how you can manipulate the “what comes in” part.

I’m not knocking NASCAR, but putting them on a pedestal for the prize money THEY still pay is great, but ultimately THEY aren’t paying it. They’re the accountant collecting it and holding it on to and then handing out the checks. The money isn’t coming from NASCAR. The purses come from the tracks. The awards come from contingency sponsors. The point fund comes from the tracks and the sponsors.

You can applaud the series for paying what they did in post-season awards, but ultimately they just lived up to what they promised they would do. They paid out a prorated point fund based on a nine race season. And why wouldn’t they when they had nine races to piece together that point fund?

As far your guess that going forward NASCAR will announced more of the financials, I wouldn’t hold your breath on that happening any time soon.

I know you’re a monster fan of all things Whelen Modified Tour JD, and I’m not trying to take shots here, but the rosy picture you paint I’m not sure I’m seeing it.

Let’s remember, there are seven track operators in all of America that were interested in bringing the Whelen Modified Tour to their facilities for the 2021 season. That’s a number that should make everyone involved with the series terrified. That’s a number that’s trending in the wrong direction. Without tracks wanting to put on events for the series there won’t be any more six-figure point funds. It’s hard to pay point funds when no tracks can afford the economics that come with their facility being the one to pay out the money that builds that point fund.

I applaud NASCAR for all they do as far as the organization of the series, the organization of events, the overall way things are professionally operated and how they live up to paying out what they pay out, but it’s hardly lollipops and sunshine right now for the series.

  25. Jeez, going all Doug on me. I had to take a nap halfway through your response. That’s cool though.

I know and completely understand all that(as do you). I even agree with a lot of it. But why must we always knock down the tour after a simple factually correct statement. The tour paid $220k in 2020. End of story. Instead it’s followed by a 10 paragraph response (longest SC response ever?) of all things wrong with the tour and a detailed response of where every dollar came from which by the way is in the rulebook online. It’s not a state secret. Just Doug proof. He hasn’t found it yet. It’s like nobody can have a simple positive WMT detail stand on its own merit. It has to be picked apart to the enth degree until it is portrayed as a negative.

Maybe that’s why Jimmy released it on FB instead of issuing a newsworthy press release that surely would have garnered responses and feedback. Why bother when those same people will just pick it apart.

    Happy St. Patrick’s Day gents.

🌈JD🌈, what was your point about this: “My boy Jimmy Wilson announced the other day that the WMT paid out a $220,000 point fund in a virus stricken, shortened 2020 season.”

So the Tour paid out $220K. Why did you bring that up? Was the $220K points fund fantastic, or did it suck? Why is that news?

Are we race fans or purse and point fund fans?

So very simple, what is newsworthy about the $220K 2020 NWMT points fund, and was it a good thing, or did it suck? Please explain.

    Another 🎯 rich 🌈JD🌈 posting.

🌈JD🌈, consult with Doug and his other personalties. They did a walk-up vs season ticket analysis and figured out how to save 32¢.

🌈JD🌈, you clearly state the $220K is a positive thing. You read that Jimmy posted about the $220K on FB and you try to make it look like you are some sort of insider. What a toolbag.

The simple fact is the $220K has significance, just not the way you think. You want people to fawn over the $220K, there are others that know otherwise. That $220K is probably 3, 4, 5 or 6 times the annual income of the vast majority of the peanut gallery, and that means you. You are completely enamored by such a big number – $220,000 – looks like a big number. Just think of all the things you can buy at the garden center.

A season’s (~15+ races) tire bill can run around $60K. That’s just tires. Is that right around your annual income? Not a state secret. But folks in the peanut gallery, that means you, do not have access to that information. In 2020, teams spent ~$25K on tires, depending on how many test sessions they did. How many tire bills have you seen? I’m guessing a big fat ZERO. I mention tire bills because it can be one of the largest single item expenses per season. That of course depends on motor refreshes, blown up motors, new chassis, etc. Have you ever seen the receipts? 🧾

Perhaps if you made posts that were specific, on point and factual, told the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, and were not illusory or delusional, maybe you wouldn’t get all the return fire. 🌈JD🌈, you really do think you are pulling 🌈 🌈 🌈 🌈 🌈 🌈 🌈 out of your sphincter.

So 🌈JD🌈, how was that $220K divided up and distributed? How much profit did owners walk away with at the end of the season? Why do you care?

🌈JD🌈, it can cost about $7,500 to run a Tour Type Modified in a single event, depending on any special prep, and number of tires allowed. That’s when you roll up all the costs. You apparently have no idea what all the costs are. That’s no secret. And that number is several years old, so it’s a bit higher now.

🌈JD🌈, you must think that a car is just refueled and it’s ready to go in the next race. You have no idea what it takes to campaign a competitive car. Any idea what it’s gonna cost to haul a car and transport a team to all these events away from CT? Then compare all that cost to the couple grand the car might win. You don’t have a chance at a clue.

The bottom line 🌈JD🌈 is that you have no idea what it takes to campaign a competitive car, you are a member of the non-exclusive peanut 🥜 gallery, and the $220,000 looks like a huge amount of money to you. Although you can buy a truckload of radish and squash seeds with that $220K at the home center, it might help one team to run competitive cars in a full season. Then the fact that the $220K was divided up among the teams is just another fact. Thank goodness the 2020 event was virtual… they saved a fortune traveling that would have eaten up their share of the points fund award. Think of all those tuxedo rental expenses. For many, if not most teams, it would have cost more to attend the championship awards banquet in person than the amount of the award.

Racing is a hobby, not a profit center, and how those that can afford the hobby is none of your damn business. How these people that can afford the hobby choose to spend their money is none of your damn business. What little you know and have access to is enough to make you the forum jester 🤡, and not helpful or insightful at all. It’s not in your best interests to talk as if you know what you are talking about.

That $11,000 for first place 🥇 at Martinsville will not cover the cost to run the event. The tire bill alone will consume 25% of that. Martinsville is 650 miles one way, diesel is running $3.50 per gallon, that’s $1,200 right there.

The folks that are racing are not doing it to make money, that’s just not possible, and they can afford the hobby. How much they spend and lose of their money is none of your damn business.

Why do you care????? And you clearly have no idea or access to the full facts of the alleged concern. I’ve participated in these funding discussions to try to enlighten you and your ilk, but there’s no hope. Explaining this to four year olds is far more productive and gratifying.

🌈JD🌈, just pay attention to the racing. You are not equipped with what is needed to carry on a discussion about the purse, points fund or financing required to field a competitive Tour Type Modified.

Nobody is knocking down or picking on the Tour, there are facts, facts that can not be obfuscated or contorted. But then in order to obfuscate or contort the facts, one must know the facts AND understand them. That leaves you out.

Teams, the employees, staff, fans, sanctioning body, fans, series, fans, etc. have all made it clear they are not supporting the track as long as Bemer is still the owner. They have pulled out and made it clear they are not going to be involved with the track. Without the cars, teams, series, staff, etc., and oh yeah, those paying customers, there is nothing going on at the track. Nothing.”

When Bemer was arrested and admitted to the deeds, I posted what was going to happen and what was not going to happen. I was right. That was incredibly obvious. The NLWSB was at a crossroads of trouble. It was dilapidated, needed rehabilitation, and the owner gets in really big legal trouble, trouble that rendered the ‘bowl insignificant to Bemer. The ‘bowl became collateral damage.

    darealgoodfella says
    December 3, 2020 at 6:15 pm
Look, tracks have no idea what the crowd limits will be in 2021, or what crowds will show up given the severity of the COVID-19 #TrumpPandemic, and the dire predictions that forecast very dark, bleak times ahead, well into or through the racing season. That makes it impossible for tracks to predict revenues and commit to NASCAR. NASCAR requires commitments, and under these conditions, commitments are simply not possible.

    darealgoodfella says
    December 2, 2020 at 5:10 pm
Smart people will be isolating through ’21. The vaccines will not be widely available to the general public until late ’21.

  40. 🌈JD🌈, you are still appearing ignorant. There is still a pandemic going on. The pandemic is why the garden centers have been jamming.

This is the latest from Gov. Lamont:

“The governor said that on April 2, amusement parks can open, indoor stadiums will open at 10 percent capacity, outdoor events can have 50 percent capacity or 10,000 people, and summer camps and festivals can start plans to reopen.”

The CT racetracks will have capacity reductions.

So we’re still looking at capacity restrictions, which also means revenue impediments. This will affect racing one way or another.

And a sold out event that was capped at 50% capacity is really nothing to brag about. But you will.

And Doug, er, WeldingWonders, I don’t have to apply for COVID related rent relief, I’m living rent free, thanks to you. Thank you very much.

The maximum tire allotment available for this event is twelve (12) tires per team. All tires used for qualifying and the race must be purchased at the track and scanned by Hoosier, unless otherwise approved in advance by the Series Director. Four (4) tires must be used for qualifying and to begin the race. All qualifying tires must remain in impound until released by NASCAR Officials. The remaining tire allotment may be used for practice and/or change tires during the event. The tire change rule is four (4) tires, any position. A team representative will be permitted in the tire impound area during a specified time to mount, air and size tires. By the designated time the team representative must determine which tires of the allotment will be used for qualifying and which tires of the allotment will be used as practice and/or change tires during the race. At the designated time(s), NASCAR Officials may permit the race/change tires, as an option by the team representative, to be removed from the tire impound area to be utilized during practice. will require the approval of the Series Director. A maximum of four (4) tires from previous NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour events may be used for practice sessions only, providing the tires used are the same codes supplied by Hoosier for use at Martinsville Speedway. If approved in advance by the Series Director, teams may bring up to eight (8) tires from home for practice. In this case the team will forfeit their allotted practice tires at Martinsville Speedway and cannot utilize a fourth (4th) change tire during the race. These tires must be presented to NASCAR and marked prior to going to the track for practice.

Emergency Change Tires may only be used in the event of a flat tire, damaged wheel and/or the tire cannot maintain the recommended minimum pressures from Hoosier. Emergency Change Tires cannot be a new/sticker tire. Emergency Change Tires may only be used if approved by NASCAR Officials. The procedure for utilizing an Emergency Change Tire will be discussed in the Driver/Crew Chief Meeting.
