Monday local multimedia short track reporter Nicole LaRose posted a video on Facebook opening up about a sexual assault she was a victim of last weekend at New Smyrna Speedway.

We did it again didn’t we. A really serious and relevant subject. One we men that dominate racing and almost completely dominate this forum really know little about. Yet me have all the answers.
It’s not political but there is political irony. An audience that overwhelmingly supported the last president looking past his record of indiscretions with women. Yet in this instance with a local woman, known and respected the target the forum has had a come to Jesus moment where every soul is strongly for the rights or women.
You know those guys that turned out to be enablers. We like to think we’re better then them but there’s no way of knowing if we would have reacted differently in the same situation. If it’s a friend, you’re surrounded by friends and peers acting a certain way you don’t know if you’d be the one guy to cross your “team” and intervene. You hope and think you would but there’s no way you can know for sure. Maybe the best you could do is simply fall silent.
We all want to believe the enablers are somehow different but they might not be. If they were such an exception this entire issue wouldn’t even be an issue..
So far the threads regarding this topic like most have descended from brief messages of support to posturing, provocation, infighting and addressing past grudges. Talking when we should be listening.
There is redemption. Spend the $5, listen to these woman and try to glean something from what they say that may help you understand their situation in the future. Show Ms Dupuis that she need not accept the status quo and that the sport can change.
Doug, this is part of society, not just racing. This should be very visible to anyone that let’s themselves see it in every facet of society. Or there are pigs 🐖 like you, that refer to women as “chicks”.
I’m in an industry that was male dominated, simply because the education system was heavily male biased. The bias in the education system is no longer as biased and more women are in engineering. But the general subjugation of women to men, the toxic fragile male masculinity still exists.
The movie “Hidden Figures” is fantastic. Not only were the lead characters women, they were Black women, and had to go through far worse. They were incredible, courageous women. But still, the more things change, the more they stayed the same.

You’re right Eddy. It is a common familiar form for Melissa. One that a young lady may be happy to have through her formative years. In any event there should be some acceptance by the person to which it is being applied. Melissa Fifield is not a 10 year old girl and does not go by the familiar name of “Missy”. She’s a grown woman, business owner that does charitable work and a NWMT driver. You know or at least you should that using pejorative references in this forum is a common tactic. One that is disingenuous especially when anonymous people label actual racing personalities You may wish to review the use of the reference to “Missy” in context. There is tremendous value in the NASCAR Most Popular Driver award. It enables credibility when soliciting sponsorship.
Look at the list of previous winners of the MPD award. C’mon… Missy has no place on that list. And that she was on the list in her first three years on the Tour is laughable. Not a single lead lap finish in those first three years. Two DNQs. Who is this?
Sexism is not the explanation. Sexism as an excuse is disingenuous and hurts the #METOO, equality and anti-misogyny movements. Did you see the movie “Hidden Figures”? Well, my wife is a professional in a historically male controlled and populated field. My daughters are professionals in historically male controlled and populated fields. My wife and daughters are in the same conditions as the three lead roles in the movie.

Does the 01 get criticized? Yeah, sure. And rightfully so. All backmarkers are pointed out at some point, and then some. They get in the way, cause yellows, etc. Some more than others. How many backmarkers won the Most Popular Driver award their first three years on the Tour? I know of just one… Missy. The stats of the 01 are horrible. Perhaps the worst ever on the NWMT. And Missy won the MPD award in the first three years on the Tour. Did Missy win the RotY award?
For those of you that think this criticism of the 01 is rooted in sexism, I ask “Why?”. If sexism were to be real, the women that are not backmarkers, competitive and running with the big dogs would be targeted. But that is not happening at all. Those women are not getting this type of treatment. Why attack a harmless back marker, and not the competitive women? Or at least, equal opportunity sexism?
In conclusion, the treatment Missy gets is not rooted in sexism. Keep looking for the real reason. Consider the Most Popular Driver award debacle. There are sexists out there, but this situation is not, and far from, dominated by sexism.
So I ask again, why is Missy criticized like this? What is it about her that draws this response? Why aren’t all women we know in racing treated like this? Perhaps the Most Popular Driver award debacle? She is not and will not be allowed to distance herself from the MPD award.

I’m disappointed Eddy you would agree that attaching a nickname to a female driver that she has never used, one more suitable to a young girl then beating the hell out of it attack after attack on the woman is not somehow inappropriate.
Assignment of nicknames or use of familiar derivations of a name requires their acquiescence if you have any respect for the person. That was not the case with the use of “Missy”. In context it was used as a pejorative to trivialize the person being attacked and you should have the grace to understand that. In my view Eddy you’ve just enabled the marginalizing of of a woman and the tactic used in that particular thread that by any standard was withering and inappropriate.
I do love women in racing, have referred to them as “chicks” on a few occasions and have admitted to being a sexist regarding that. If there is a woman in any race I root for her or them. The Stafford SK Lights are packed with woman and in my view makes them the second best division at Stafford to watch. And to be clear I apply my sexism to every woman in the division rooting for them to get the best finish they can not just the front runner.
I’ve also admitted to being a bigot. A repentant one and work in progress as it were but a bigot none the less.
My personal view of bigotry and sexism is there are shades of gray. My sexism applies mostly to racing as is a form of reverse sexism. It is not something I apply to the rest of my life especially to tenant applications where my two units have a 66% female occupancy rate.
The pet name for the most important woman in my life since the fall of 1972 has been “chick” and still is. She has never expressed any objection to it. Tony Beets on the popular show Gold Rush refers to his wife as “chick” and she doesn’t object to it. My “chick” and Tony Beets “chick” are both strong willed matriarchs of their respective families.
I think if anything what that shows is that the reference is more an affectation of respect and affection regarding the way Tony Beets and I use it. Which doesn’t make it right now. Two geezers using a term from the last century no matter how benign is not appropriate.

Doug, Missy is a terrible driver. No doubt about it. She can’t make speed. That she has a business and does charitable stuff is irrelevant. That is neither an excuse or explanation. What she does and does not do on the track is what it is all about. She has great equipment, used every chassis out there, has great motors, still can’t drive. This is about racing, racing is COMPETING, this is not about getting participation awards like in grammar school. Watch on entry… she looks terrified, in a panic braking, instead of a deliberate, controlled braking. It’s as if she’s afraid of going fast. But then, she’s going so slow, why does she even hit the brakes, other cars are flying by her. Even before she gets to the entry, on decel of the straightaway, watch… she’s stabbing for the brake, as if she’s terrified. Her front rotors are GLOWING!!! She must be riding the brake, her lack of speed should not glow the rotors when faster cars are blowing by her and NOT glowing their rotors. And after all these years… there’s just no hope. Well, there is in that I hope the car counts go up and she DNQs. The 01 is a road cone for all the other back markers. Missy should function as an owner and put Renee Dupius or Alexandra Fearn in the car. That would be freakin’ AWESOME!!!!!
This thread’s title is about Unmuffled. I’ve noticed a marked uptick in subscribers no doubt from the importance of the subject matter and the quality of the venue it appears in. Many thinking no doubt to make it temporary then check out later. That would be a mistake in my view. You may find as I that it is indispensable to getting the broadest perspectives right from the mouths of the participants. Actually looking forward to seeing it in the email in box.
Plus if you’re a frequent participant in the comments section it’s just bad form to be a dead beat not supporting the single most important media outlet for local racing in some form financially.
Doug, my clarification was thrown out there because there is a difference between referring to a female generically as “missy” and someone referring to someone named Melissa as “Missy”, the capital letter being the difference. I didn’t think “Missy” was derogatory in and of itself, just a way she was referred to in the post. Who knows? In her personal world she may use “Missy”. I know a woman about to be a grandmother again that has been called Missy since childhood and prefers it. I go by Eddie even though I’m old from being named after my dad. Very well Fast Eddie. I personally think if one reads the entire thread in context, using your own name, capitalization as well all the notion that she may have used Missy at some point in her life has to be one of the most obtuse rationalizations I’ve ever read. Then again I’m biased.

Vehicle technology IS math, high level math. I don’t even bother getting into conversations about technology or chassis tuning unless the person has the appropriate training. It’s all math, and that math is not available until later college classes, and gets really useful in grad school math

Most of you won’t be able to finish the flat 5 miles, almost all won’t be able to sustain 15 mph for 5 miles, most of you won’t be able to achieve 15 mph, and those that do will perish during the first sprint. I average a little over 18 MPH for casual rides on a very hilly 43 mile circuit.

There are no objections or agreements to comments made about Melissa Fifield. My one point was the “Missy” reference used by some people was most likely directly referencing her specifically, unlike the use of “chicks” which refers to any women in general as far as most people understand it. I’m not condoning, objecting to, or suggesting anything; just making an observation. No intent behind it towards anyone or in any direction. I’ve explained my use of chicks and made it clear its not appropriate. I admit it freely even though there is no record of me saying it here. Meanwhile I provide an entire thread of bizarre attacks on a woman and you can’t bring yourself to say any part of it is wrong. Sighting some arcane reference to one being a specific reference to a specific person and the other to a group. My use of chick was always to a specific woman and the content of the post congratulatory.
Spin it anyway you like. It’s tacit approval of a vicious attack on a woman. One that you have made clear that you have little regard for on the track and apparently as a person.
That’s what it boils down to. Support of women in racing as transactional. Protecting woman that may be attractive or winners like they’re you’re daughters but Fifield more often then not attacked and ridiculed.

To all those that think, suggest, and demand that this should have been handled differently; it’s incredibly easy for you to critique what happened.
1) YOU WEREN’T there in an unexpected highly stressful and potentially dangerous position she was.
3) YOU WERE able to take time to analyze the entire situation including the outcome before commenting.
SHE DID WHAT SHE THOUGHT WAS BEST FOR HER AT THE TIME! She needs our SUPPORT for speaking out against something that was VERY WRONG, no matter how you view it. Cavemen are SUPPOSED to be extinct. Let’s do what we can to reinforce that, for our wives, sisters, daughters, grandmothers, aunts, and nieces! No woman should be subjected to this behavior in the 21st century!

Thing is the question about involving law enforcement was asked in the interview and the answer insightful. My first thought is you both are persona’s with screen ID’s in a forum. You can’t set an example because your behavior in the real world is not known. Your behavior here however is known.
I will be the last one to say there is equivalency in Nicole’s situation involving sexual harassment and assault with the way Fifield has been treated in these pages over the years. However if you take the sum total of the years of abuse DarealGoodfella has heaped on Fifield with Fast Eddy’s tacit approval I doubt you come up with a shining example for young men on how woman should be treated.
Cavemen in this case seems apt.

Well first you’d have to ignore the years of abuse you’ve directed at Fifield. Attacking literally every facet of her as a human being. All that making the notion of you referring to her as “Missy” literally dozens of times while berating her as just being more folksy one of the most brazen spins imaginable.
If you can forget all that the point is it’s not your place to assign more familiar names to anyone. She is Melissa, Melissa Fifield, Ms Fifield or the driver of the 01. Not “Missy” dozens of times or any of the other insulting derivations you’ve used.
